I have a measly 6.5 mile run planned for today, however, it’s 50degF here and raining pretty steadily, with 17mph wind. I figure if I go for it, I will gain a lot in hardcoreness points, but that will mean little to nothing if I end up getting a cold. What would you do?
Yes, going to the gym is also an option, but I’d rather gouge my eyes out than run on the treadmill.
you could actually enjoy it–just dress right, and make sure to take a hot shower and drink green tea and eat a healthy dinner afterwards (take a vitamin C too).
i’m sure you’ve ran in colder harsher conditions…
(don’t blame you for not wanting to do it on the treadmill…i just did 30 minutes on mine and nearly went bonckers just from that!!)
Damn, quit making me envious. It is 85 with 80% humidity here. I dream about weather like you describe. Btw - running in wet cool weather has no effect on “catching” a cold. Only the transmission of germs can help you there. Have fun out there…
Viruses give you colds, not running in wet weather. Put on your jacket and get going, just don’t touch the door knob at the Starbuck’s you stop at to pee, it’s covered with germs that will make you sick! Ever see the show “Monk” he won’t touch anything in public. It’s pretty funny but in this day and age rather true. Wash your hand a lot and keep your immune system strong and you will be running all winter just fine.
Alright, I’m doin’ it. Await my post tomorrow entitled, “I ran in the rain yesterday and now I have a cold :(” …
girl, you’re gonna be fine. now do as we say, and eat well tonight. besides, this run can be your excuse the sit on the couch for the rest of the evening, all snuggled up in a soft blanket with hot tea or coco.
Hope your run went well.
I love running in harsh conditions. It inspires me to know that most will stay home, warm and dry whhile I’m out pounding the pavement in the cold rain.
As others have said, colds are caused by a virus, not by cold or wet weather. The reason colds are common in those conditions is because people stay inside more than any other time of the year and spread germs.
Thanks for the well wishes, my run went splendidly. I gained about 5 pounds of water weight during the whole thing.
Good thing is that I feel healthier than ever and I think I gained a few badass points and earned a nice evening of curling up on the couch with Peppermint tea, which I’m going to get to post haste.
Next step is to run in the snow, but I’ll have to wait a month or two yet for that.
Mik - If you have a run “planned”, you MUST at least put your shoes on and give it a go for…5/10 minutes. If it sucks, you can always turn back. I find my best runs are those which started off with a bad attitude or I felt bad. Funny how that works…
