To install or not to install that is the question

I recently bought an new unlocked cell phone (motorola PEBL). It came with software for my computer and the data cable. After trying to install it some microsoft program informed me that the drivers I wanted to install (directly off the Motorola cd) where not “kosher” i.e. microsoft didnt test them for compatiblity with the O.S. (XP) and warned me that if I continue to install the driver I maybe subject to system crashes, increased vulnerability to viruses, random body cavity searches at airports, an increased susceptibility to AIDS, rectal cancer and that Britney would get back together with K-Fed.

How high of a probiblity is it that my computer is going to crash if I install this program? It isnt like I am installing a shady program from never before heard of company based in some jungle nation that will flood my computer with spyware. I have had good luck in the past (I think it has crashed once in multiple years of use) which I attribute to not installing shady programs and not tinkering with things I dont know about.

Also not that it should matter (right?) but I bought the phone off of ebay and I am pretty sure the company I bought it from (based in the USA) purchased a bulk shipment of these phones from some European or Asian country.

Sounds like you may have a gray market phone; it’s probably OK, but I would suggest downloading the driver’s from Motorola’s web site so you can be pretty certain they’re OK.

Windows will throw up this warning for most drivers - companies don’t like having to pay an additional Microsoft tax to have the driver tested.

I’m installing new hardware and drivers on my PC every week - I can’t recall the last time I had a bad driver. Not to say it doesn’t happen, just not so frequent.
