Thought this was especially interesting on this day of dread, otherwise known as inauguration day.
In Human, All Too Human, existential philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche had this to say about hope: Hope. Pandora brought the jar with the evils and opened it. It was the gods’ gift to man, on the outside a beautiful, enticing gift, called the “lucky jar.” Then all the evils, those lively, winged beings, flew out of it. Since that time, they roam around and do harm to men by day and night. One single evil had not yet slipped out of the jar. As Zeus had wished, Pandora slammed the top down and it remained inside. So now man has the lucky jar in his house forever and thinks the world of the treasure. It is at his service; he reaches for it when he fancies it. For he does not know that that jar which Pandora brought was the jar of evils, and he takes the remaining evil for the greatest worldly good–it is hope, for Zeus did not want man to throw his life away, no matter how much the other evils might torment him, but rather to go on letting himself be tormented anew. To that end, he gives man hope. In truth, it is the most evil of evils because it prolongs man’s torment.
So Hope all you want. It will get you squat. Things will not change until people take responsibility for their own path. Sadly, I don’t see this happening in the near future. If anything, the canonization of the savior, will only push the solution to our problems farther into the future.

Personal responsibility is key. However, their has been a fundamental shift in our society that I have noticed over the last 20 - 30 years - less and less people actually take responsibility for their actions and what they do. People seem to go out of their ways these days, to look for fault elsewhere. It’s never their fault - it’s always someone elses.
People did take responsibility. By turning out and voting for the candidate they felt best represented their interests. They took responsibility and said “enough”. They said we’d like to join the rest of the world by implementing a sane health care system, regain the trust of the global community, and take absolute power away from unregulated laissez faire robber barons.

I’m not sure if that is a funny or sad post. To actually view people voting in hopes for more handouts to be taking responsiblity for their own path in life is just… I don’t know if its sad or funny, but it sure isn’t smart.
that’s right. people don’t want to take responsibility, they want the government to do it all for them. but they also want to have freedom. the news is that it doesn’t work that way–we cannot have the government do everything and also maintain personal freedoms.
when the communist manifesto begins today, in 10 years when people have no personal freedoms left, they will wonder how they heck they got there.
my biggest wish is that the ingoing party is incompetent and nothing will get done. that would be the greatest blessing of all.

At a high level, isn’t that what all this government aid and bailout help is doing. People made some really bad choices - when it came to example, getting a loan for a house purchase. Not their fault, I guess! It’s some pretty strong symbolism if you ask me.
“when the communist manifesto begins today, in 10 years when people have no personal freedoms left, they will wonder how they heck they got there.”
Classic. In an era of warrantless wiretaps and the government’s ability to take people into custody and sending them to foreign countries for “rendition” you think the loss of personal freedom is yet to come. Tell you what. Let’s meet back here in 10 years and see what freedoms you have lost in the meantime. You’ll need your Arabic language dictionary though.

Honestly Kitty, that rates among the stupidest comments I’ve ever read on the LR.
Dude, you obviously haven’t been paying attention. Just search posts made by Mattinsf and you can find hundreds of comments that would easily be far less, eh, enlightened.
People made some bad choices, banks made some really bad choices, and so on and so on. The problem is that the effects of those choices now impact so widely as to affect everyone. Your neighbor’s foreclosure affects your property values whether you were responsible or not. The bank’s inability to make loans puts your company out of business and you out of a job whether you did everything right or not.
The building you live in is on fire because some bonehead didn’t put his cigarette out. You can
a) Let the building burn down and teach him a good lesson
or
b) extinguish the fire even if it means saving that SOB smoker on the 14th floor.
I agree with you Fleck. Americans need to sack up. The fact is this country is LAZY and GREEDY and the lack of personal responsibility is disgusting.
Obese people want to have surgery or take a pill to get slim instead of puttin down the fries and go to a gym. Then they sue McD’s for making them fat. (Aside, I think this is why I love the Biggest Loser because it is great to see people take responsibility for their health and get their lives back on track). The banks loaned trillions to people who could ill afford those mortgages and now we are bailing their sorry asses out. The legal system has made it too easy to blame someone else (and try to get rich quick). Fall down and hurt your knee skiing? SUE SUE SUE the ski area. They shouldn’t have ice on a trail. (Not that I am against all litigation, it is truly warranted in many cases, but serious change is needed in our legal system).
I think if you are a liberal (of which I am) OR a conservative, it needs to stop.
You might want to check into who the legal lobbyists contribute the bulk of their money to. (ATLA - American Trial Lawyers Association is the #5 contributor on the lobbyist list).
Tort Reform has long been the call of many conservatives in the Republican party.
