Tisk tisk GOP, can't we just stick to business?

So it goes

So the next Presidential election is about Perry’s stance on marriage and his willingness to sign a pledge - its this really the litmus test? If he is the nominee the majority on this board are going to vote for Obama because of Perry’s position, really?

Please, please, don’t take you eye off the ball. For once, I wish we would focus on what candidate’s do when it really matters.

I have seen Perry hold a prayer meeting because his state hadn’t received rain in a while. I’ve seen what this candidate does when it matters and don’t need to see any more.

You say that as if he didn’t do anything except pray. That’s simply not true. He also asked the federal government for money.

To be fair, Obama pretty much has New York and the west coast locked up against most Republicans. I don’t think Perry is going to try to win those states.

This election will be like the last 3. Obama and the GOP will fight over Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

EDIT: Pretty much it starts out being a 100-100 race. The Dems get the west coast and New York, the pubs get the deep south. From there they pick key battleground states to focus their campaigns around.

The Tea Party is effectively calling the shots within the GOP

Not sure how much NH news gets out, but have you seen whats been happening to Kimball (the Tea Party head of the NH Republican Party). Its been 7 months and the door is about to hit his butt on the way out…

My prediction - NH will turn blue in 2012 due to the big swing right in 2010.

I know I live in my fantasy world but those thing should be left to the states.

I have seen Perry hold a prayer meeting because his state hadn’t received rain in a while.

And this threatens you in what way?

What if it was Obama and he performed an African rain dance in his back yard? Yeah…its about that ridiculous.

Now Perry is going on and on about gays. WTF. Why?
This guy is a fruitloop, pledging to make an amendment on anti-gay marriage.
Who does he think he is?

This is so frustrating!!! Why can’t the stupid GOP just stick to business, jobs, financials, etc.

The right winged moral majority shit is for the birds, this is where they lose it.
Give me a break. Why. WHY!!!

It’s their fatal flaw, they stand up for things they can’t believe in

The dems is, in case you were curious, is they won’t stand up for what they do believe in

Didn’t Obama state he was against gay marriage in the made for TV event with Rick Warren? Seems to me he and Perry are aligned on this issue. He also stated he prays every day and put his trust in Jesus Christ as his lord and savior at the same meeting. Why all the bashing on the repubs when Obama said the same things?

Oh thats right, he doesn’t really believe in it, he just says what people want to hear.

The economy is in the tank because god is punishing our country for being so pro-homosexual. Ban gay marriage and all will be good again. Just ask Fred Phelps.

Wow, this is an original talking point! I recall seeing that exact argument many times, usually used as a diversion. By the way, when you get past your talking point, this brings up an interesting question, What is your opinion about gay rights? Do you support a federal amendment defining marriage? What about DOMA? DADT? civil unions? Would your viewpoint be more aligned with Perry or Obama on these issues?

(P.S. Here is a copy/paste of my response to the exact same argument from a short time ago: )

Hey isn’t Obama against gay marriage? This is Obama, the first gay president (Clinton was the first black POTUS), and he agrees with the perp in the OP.

I think that his position is “evolving” ;). Let me get your argument straight, 1.) Obama’s position on gay rights is exactly the same as conservatives in the GOP, 2.) Therefore Obama sucks. Obama is soooo bad, your equating him with conservatives? Right?

Unfortuantely for your argument, Obama has been diametrically opposed to the GOP on almost every issue regarding gay rights (DADT, DOMA, UN Declaration of Rights, Prop 8, etc…), which brings us to your second point (apparently) the GOP position on gay rights sucks. Admittedly, Obama dances around the gay marriage issue. It’s frustrating, but everyone know what his real viewpoint is. However, whatever honesty points he would get by being unequivocally supportive of marriage equality would be at the cost of several percentage points in battleground states. Don’t worry, win or lose, his viewpoint on gay marriage will fully evolve by 2013.

The President should LEAD on this issue, not worry about votes…

The President should LEAD on this issue, not worry about votes…

And he has led on gay rights issues more than any other President ever (DADT repeal, DOMA opposition, rights for federal employees). The sole exception is gay marriage, which he has admittedly danced around. At this point he gains a tactical advantage by supporting equal rights and remaining ambivalent about gay marriage. It isn’t just an election tactic (although that is certainly one explanation). There are simply not enough votes to overturn DOMA. It will take ~10 years of waiting for the legislative tide to turn, or it will take a SCOTUS decision to end it. If Obama took a clearer position on the issue it wouldn’t matter on the vote count, and it might in fact harden opposition to gay rights, and slow the inevitable momentum for equal marriage rights.

The President should LEAD on this issue, not worry about votes…

Shouldn’t all Presidents do that on every issue or is it just this issue or this President that is a problem?
