I am trying to decide what tires to buy for my 650 Zipp 404 Wheels. Does anyone have any preferences on brand, type, and size? If so, why do you believe they are the best tires?
Thanks,

Clincher or tubular?
Clinchers
.
oh, then you are looking for training tires. ![]()
I just went to the store to price some Zipp 404 clinchers, and the guy in the store said they only have tubulars. I have no techinical or mechanical ability whatsoever. I am worried about getting tubulars because I'm sure I will never be able to fix a flat if I get one. Should I order the Zipp 404 clinchers on-line, or are tubulars not that complicated? What do you do if you get a flat in a race?
I’m just teasing after the raging debate several months ago. Us old dogs grew up on tubies and are comfortable mounting and changing in race situations. (I personally run zipp 404 or 303 with Veloflex tubies) Many also like the ride feel although it’s about as easy to explain as how an atheist could be moral to Matt. The performance magin is almost nil nowadays. For racing I would recommend the Veloflex or Vittoria ‘open’ clincher tires if you go that route. they are basically a clincher made like a sew-up in materials. Supple sidewalls and a nice rice ride at 115psi. If your friend/LBS have convinced you that high pressure is the way to go, look into the Conti Attack/Force combo. good prices at labicicletta.com. avoid the urge to go supper skinny. Those tires will beat the crap out of your back, esp on the longer races, and you’ll feel it on the run. Happy shopping, I’ve never met an unhappy Zipp product user.
In my opinion the best performing clincher is the Michelin Pro Race 23mm front and back.
Next would be the Continential Grand Prix 3000.
Both are easy to find, good quality and grip but the Michelins just seem to be a little faster.
Vittoria’s are good too but just below the others.
I’ve never ridden on Veloflex so I can’t comment on them.
Next on my list to try are the Tufo Tubular Clinchers. A lot of people here like them.
First, check out your local bike store, if you can’t find them there go to www.biketiresdirect.com
