Tire Question (2)

It has been mentioned that skinny tires are faster than fat tires. I have a race this weekend (my first) and have 25C tires on my bike. I am a bigger guy at 188 lbs an thought that I had also read that fatter tires are better/faster/more comfortable for me at my weight. Since I donot have any real cash for new racing rims, would simply changing to a different tire give me a little extra speed come Sunday?

Thanks

23’s, but no narrower. If clinchers - Vittoria Open Corsa KS or CX, Vittoria Diamante Pro, Michelin Pro Race. I don’t suggest any of the lighter weight clinchers at 188 lbs if you are also looking for reliability.

Most likely not. Don’t waste your money on 2mm (nominal) narrower tires unless your current tires are worn and you need to replace them.

I would agree with 180, however, when they wear out, don’t worry about 23s. I’m over 200 and have had no problem.

I’ve raced and trained for the past 15 years at weights that’ll vary from 160 to 183. Currently at 170 or so…I’ve always used 19’s and even had 18’s for awhile. I find I corner faster then 98% of the people and get flats about 3 times per year. They say narrow tires are slower??? I just don’t beleive it…I’ll keep riding my 19’s.

I run a 23 on the back and a 20 on the front - a bit like a drag racer! The handling is awesome. But then I’m only 63kg (thats 141 pounds to you guys).
