Tips for Running Peachtree Road Race?

So I’m a pretty terrible runner and I signed up to do the Peachtree Road Race with my Mother in law. Any tips for training leading up to this? I’m hoping for a time under 1 hour but I’m honestly not sure how likely that is going to be to happen. I’m currently only running about 10-15 miles per week and I’m a pretty heavy guy. Any last minute advice or training tips to get me in shape for a race in 4ish weeks? I live about a mile from the course so I can run segments of it pretty regularly if that helps at all.

Don’t bother running the course now, you’ll just have to stop too many times trying to cross streets. Try not to go to fast in the first few miles as it’s slightly downhill and the crowd makes you want to run faster.

Just try to seed yourself at the front of your wave.

It’s the last two miles you should try to not slow your pace on. Don’t stop for donuts at Publix, don’t get dowsed with water and fill your shoes up, turning them in to wet bricks.

Once you hit heart break hill by the Shepard’s Center, start marking runners, keeping up with them or passing them.

Didn’t say anything about no chicken tender subs though…

Look at course profile…downhill early…an hour with all the people on the course will be good. Are u ready for heat and humidity? Run the tangents if spacing allows. Taper. Don’t do anything different just for race ( i.e. Shoes, diet, maybe take half day from work day before and get off feet). I’ll be at mile 4.5 roughly on the left cheering some folks on for about and hour or so after the Africans go rolling by. Good race to you.

Train in the heat. It’s been in the upper 90s to low 100s this week. I’m sure it will be hot on race day as well.

There are no shortcuts or tricks. It is downhill for 3 miles and then uphill for 3 miles. Go cautiously faster in the first half to buy the time for the much slower 2nd half. Cardiac Hill is not that horrible, so just go heads-down and push through it.

1 hour is a tough target for people in decent shape. The humidity and heat generated by the 30K people in front of you is unlike any other race.

Can’t imagine what a zoo it will be this year. Both times I ran it were probably two of the hottest races I have ever done. I am guessing with the crowds and heat index just run for the finish line this time out would be a good idea. Being in the around an hour group will put you in the thick of the numbers game. Enjoy and practice your heat game between now and then. And drink a lot.

It’s very hot and very crowded. It is a very difficult race to run for a PR-type time because of the constant weaving-through-crowds nature, especially in the first two miles and the last mile. I never ran this race for time - it is a fun run for the family, with beers and brunch at Crescent City afterward. So no real advise, other than good luck and have fun.
