Timo Bracht and family to spend 4 months near San Diego

Timo Bracht and his wife and two kids (12 and 7.5) want to spend time from the beginning of February until the beginning of June in the San Diego / Carlsbad area to get ready for a few early season races in North America. They are looking for a condo or house for that time period. Basically February 1 until May 31.

Plus once the lodging is arranged he is surely interested in training groups etc.

Any thoughts or suggestions? You can PM me and I will connect.

Herbert,

The Tri Club San Diego is always very welcoming and willing to help. I suggest emailing the president, Steven Banister, sbanister@triclubsandiego.org

But after Ironman Los Cabos last year he said, “I’m never coming back here again” In all seriousness he should look into Tucson, better facilities, and way cheaper.

Or North Scottsdale, where he would have a lot of training options. Maybe train with Jozef Major.

I know a real estate agent in Carlsbad. I’ll ask him if he knows of rentals and can help.

I’m guessing that Timo’s wife and kids like the idea of hanging out in San Diego area better than Arizona. This way everyone is happy. Personally if you are going California, I find the San Francisco Bay area is really awesome for riding/running/swimming options. Probably the most underrated area. Plus it is in Califormia and Timo’s family gets to hang out in California (if you are biased to California, which I kind of am, this is a good thing). Downside, no real beach area that you’d get in the water for without a wetsuit for family fun. You can get that in SoCal. Timo could always hang out at altitude at Slowman’s ranch where the training looks pretty awesome, but somewhat boring for his family!

San Diego is much more kid friendly than San Francisco. Legoland, Disneyland (very close), San Diego Zoo, San Diego Wild animal park, Sea World, better beaches and better climate.

I love that people chimed in about where Timo should be training instead. That wasn’t the question that was asked.

Gotta love ST!

x2…

And what value is there in piping in on a conversation only to subtly criticize other STers for piping in and at least trying to add some prospective? The fact of the matter is that most people don’t even know what is their backyard, let alone, half way across the world. How many towns can you name in Germany? I am pretty certain if Timo talked to his fellow Germans like Faris, Dirk Bockel, or Maik Twelsiak that they might suggest looking into other locations besides San Diego.

And what’s the point of jumping in on this thread and blatently insulting me? Feel better about yourself?

Merry Christmas.

BTW - I sent info to Herbert that might actually help. I hope you have done the same.

Matty Reed just bucked the trend and left Boulder for north San Diego county coast. And Luke McKenzie does pretty well being based in the same area. So things can’t be all bad here.

For one, I am not insulting you, and certainly not blatantly, or at least that wasn’t my intent. I asked you a question,~“what value is added by making fun of your peers?”. If you are taking the comment about people not knowing what is in their backyard then you are missing my point, that was a generalization about people and perspective and is not targeted at you specifically. And two, I didn’t jump into the thread - please see above. And I assume your original comment - which I took as sarcastic diss - was also targeted at me seeing as you said “I love that people chimed in about…” If you didn’t mean it in an insulting way than you can see first hand an example of how perspective matters in this case as I will say that I clearly took it that way. I had no intention of offending you, I was just legitimately curious how someone thinks that taking a digg at their peers is helpful in some matter. I see this all the time, I frankly I am always curious to see what is running thru peoples mind’s.

And yes, San Diego may be a great place, I lived there for about a year. And yes that is great that you sent Herbert some info about a real estate agent that may help. But thanks for suggesting that possibility that my mentioning “Tucson” is of absolutely no help and that I should send him some “info… that might actually help”. And yes I am being sarcastic, I took that as yet another diss. To be frank, my original comment to Herbert was more tongue-in-cheek to begin with. But I actually do think at least reminding people of the positives of Tucson is actually helpful because people don’t often think of it but it can be a nice place. On the flip side, and I don’t mean to insult you, but I honestly don’t see a lot of value when yo suay you know a real estate agent. Grant you might have emailed Herbert a gem of info, I can’t really tell, but in my opinion saying you know an agent is about as helpful as saying I know of a website, www.airbnb.com.

But to answer your questions specifically and to be clear.

“And what’s the point of jumping in on this thread and blatently insulting me?”
I didn’t intend to insult you for one, and certainly not blatantly. I’m sorry if you were offended by my question or by anything I said.

"Feel better about yourself? "
No I don’t feel better about myself. I have better things to do with my time than come on here to take flak from people when I am just trying to help. I certainly don’t intend to pick fights, but then again, I’m just not going to roll over when people take jabs. Frankly I saw you standing up on your pedestal, poking fun of Dev and myself for really no good reason. If we are spewing miss information and don’t know what we are talking about then I’m all for healthy debate. Correct us in that case, that moves us forward as a group and a society. I’m sure Dev and I both realize that wasn’t the question Herbert asked, but if someone comes on here and says “I need help deciding between crappy Product X and crappy Product Y” and when we know the products are crap and have a better suggestion, then who really cares if we pipe in if were are trying to expand the horizon.

Agreed, nothing wrong with San Diego at all. I think it is fine place to train with very nice, consistent weather. When is Matty moving out to San Diego? What is he doing with his business in Boulder? And yep, Luke seems to do pretty well in San Diego.

Two posts down from your first one I said I knew a real estate agent and would send info. I didn’t jump on here just to insult. You clearly don’t know me or you would have seen the humorous intent. Of all the posts up until that point, Dev’s was actually the most helpful analysis of the pros/cons of the area. Otherwise the consensus was that Timo was making a bad decision. That wasn’t the original question that was asked. If he’d asked for advice on where to train the answers would have been helpful but he didn’t. This happens here all the time. People answer the question they want to answer, not the one asked. Tridiego was the only person actually given him the info he asked for. That made me laugh.

Your absolutely right that I don’t know you and I could not detect the joke at all, I didn’t take it as one fwiw. There was no pink, there was no wink, nothing to help convey the point that you might just be joking about it. I may be the one person who mistook the statement and I may be unique in that regard, that is just how I took it. But yes, I did see your original comment, that is part of what drove me to my original question. I saw it as, here is a person who thinks they are the only one that has anything to offer and wants to make it known that the rest of the people are unhelpful. Had the original comment not been made I would have just thought it was another person just chiming with nothing to add but negativism, but because of the original comment I saw it as negativism with a sort of “beat-the-chest” superiority on top of it. Anyway, like I said. I apologize. Merry Christmas

Trust me, I have no delusions of superiority on here. I’m a BOP athlete who enjoys learning, answering what I can and having fun. I’ve been here for a while and let go of the pretense of having all the answers. It’s rare for me to take myself very seriously.

I spend time in the LR and it pretty much is a dick measuring contest over there. I see a perceived attack and I respond. My apologies.

Let’s do a virtual handshake and walk away.

I hope Timo find a good place to train and his family has fun.

And I hope you get in some great training over the off season and a successful year at the races.

ETA the apology because I realized I hadn’t actually apologized

If I was a pro making my living by the sport, San Diego would be an ideal place to live. The resources available are second to none.

The pros (tons of facilities, options, weather, training partners, access to int’l airport, etc) far outweigh the cons (expensive, traffic, no easy access to mountains for climbing). Another factor I would consider is access to the sports’ media and the largest and most active triathlon club in the country. Yup, San Diego has it ALL.

Weather

  • any triathletes out there opposed to training in 75-F and sunny most days year round?
  • want to freeze your ass off, go out to the Cleveland Nat’l Forest or out east (Escondido, etc) in the winter. same goes for heat training over the summer.

Facilities
Swimming

  • open water swimming, plenty of ocean available up and down the entire coastline.
  • pools, both 25 and 50 yd/m options available.
  • speedy Masters for training partners

Cycling

  • mountains, trails, flat roads for TT, etc. options are endless. any complaints and you’re really not looking too hard
  • fast groups. Swami’s Saturday ride (still going strong), Wed Camp P ride (hit or miss), etc
  • access to extended climbs at Mt. Palomar (100 mile ride round trip from Encinitas) or Mt. Laguna or Honey Springs Rd in Cleveland Nat’l Forest.
  • plenty of racing options year round with the majority of road races starting in early February through early June.

Running

  • some excellent trail options (Balboa Park, Penasquitos Canyon, Tecolote Canyon, etc).
  • Mission Bay, the coast, 56 bike path, etc. Options are endless with running paths.
  • lots of tracks.
  • plenty of racing options every weekend throughout the year.

Racing

  • summer aquathlon series (1000m/5k) for mid week tune ups
  • triathlons almost every weekend throughout the year for tune up races

AND, last but certainly not least, only a few hours drive away from Slowman’s!
