Timex Pro Team, Team IM, etc....Salary?

Do you any of you know if any of the Timex Team Members or Team Ironman members receive any type of salary for racing for the team?

I don’t have any personal knowlege of the team details, but I doubt it. I would guess the top level of the team gets gear and expenses to some events, and perhaps performance bonuses as well.

They have to ride clinchers, isn’t that payment enough?

I don’t know for sure but I believe a few get small salaries. Timex sees itself as a development team so few of the pros are “big names” Victor has done ok this year though.

Viktor has done ok this year? OK??? LOL… what about his previous two IM Austria victories…

Ok??? sh$t, you must be kidding

previous 3 IM wins in Austria I believe…

Despite Victor’s previous victories and racing credentials he certainly wasn’t a big name, especially in the US, because his big races weren’t here and his english is pretty awful. When it was clear he was winning IMCDA everyone was running around looking for a translatror just in case, although he did ok with just a little help.

He was brought on to the Timex team through the efforts of Kyle Sage who is acting as a friend/manager to help him increase his profile here. If he keeps this up and his english continues to improve I suspect that soon Victor will perform himself right out of the Timex budget and move on as many other Timex “stars” have done.

And, yes, my “OK” analysis of his year so far was a “little” tongue in cheek.

Frank,

My english is pretty good, you think I can be a major player in the US Ironman circuit?

Everyone has the potential. A good grasp of english probably improves your chances although not as much as would winning Kona.

So I take it that you receive no salary from Timex?

I downloaded the IPODEC screen saver. Its pretty sweet.

Have you heard about some kind of cranks that could improve your power output up to 40%? Those plus your english and you are on your way…

Joel

Members of Team Ironman receive some sort of salary. There are also some performance bonuses, free entry into IM events in the USA and they are required to do two of them at least.

That’s all the info I could extract from a friend who is on the team.

The Timex folks all seem to work the Timex booth at events and race amateur. Probably some sort of travel and stipend deal for promotion, as I think several of them have full time jobs elsewhere.

But it certainly fits into a grey area where they aren’t pros, but yet do get paid go to races and race “for” Timex in their logo’d gear. They all seem to be nice folks, but as a full amateur, I always feel a little disadvantaged racing against “semi-pros.”

Why? Is it because they are just faster then you, have more natural talent or something obscure like they have sponsored race kit which somehow makes then go faster.

pretty much right. But I am not sure this applies to AGers in Team Timex.

and the bonuses are indeed based on perf. so sergio gets $10,000 every month, and each month, I send them a check

We amateurs on the team don’t get paid to go to races - where did you get your info from? We get free gear, tech support at races, wholesale bike discounts, occassional availability to get into an iron at late notice (we still pay the $425 or whatever), and a few other perks that escape me at the moment. I don’t see it as any real gray area, not only do we not get paid to go to races, we pay full price.

I work full time and definitely don’t consider myself semi-pro. In fact, there are probably lots of slowtwitchers who could kick my ass up and down the Kona coast.

No offense. I was just guessing. I think you are all good guys (as in nice people, as well as fine athletes ;-)!

I didn’t know there were amateur vs. “pro” Timex folks. I was just guessing based on observation. But even that “amateur” definition is pretty much a semi-pro in any other fringe sport like hockey, lacrosse, soccer, even semi-pro baseball, etc. Nothing wrong with that at all. But you do get compensation for racing, or at least being in the sport, which is different than a non-compensated category.
