TIMEX OVA. Review?

I know some of you out there already got the new toy! So how is it?

Good?

Bad?

How does the sizing work? How much smaller are the mid-size?

Spill the beans! Worth the $70??

We got quite a few and blew through most in one day. Here’s my take: In use the OVA concept is long overdue. OVA stands for “Optimal Viewing Angle” and enables the wearer to have the watch face at roughly the 2 O’Clock position on the wrist as opposed to the top dead center 12 O’Clock posture of a normal wristwatch face. This faciliatates **much **easier reading of watch face. Additionally, the display numbers are very large on the OVA watches, something Timex has struggled with in the past. Button placement is better than any previous Ironman watch, and any previous sprotwatch IMO. Especially the location of the lap button. The real unsung triumph is a greatly impoved watchband for use with a wetsuit and swimming. If the lose end of your watchband flapping underwater has ever driven you nuts like it does me the new OVA features a wetsuit/underwater specific configuration that makes the lose end of the band coming open impossible. It is a triumph of design in its effectiveness and simplicity. Is it worth $69? Well, ultimately… maybe. It is tough to sell just a sportwatch that tells time (albeit more accurately and dependably than a $4500 Rolex) without an HRM, GPS, download function, etc. etc. However, if you want a very trim and compact simple sport watch with the time-tested Timex Ironman software routine that many people already know including an updated large display, this appears to be the current leader. Most Timex retailers offer some kind of discount, usually 10-20% off the MSRP, so shop around.

Thanks Tom

I bet you got one for your own watch collection as well.

I’m trying to resist taking one home. I’ll shoot some photos for you for size comparison.

Here’s some photos I just shot: http://images.snapfish.com/343%3B55%3B523232fp58%3Dot>2337%3D736%3D376%3DXROQDF>232389%3B36<%3B32ot1lsi http://images.snapfish.com/343%3B55%3B523232fp45%3Dot>2337%3D736%3D376%3DXROQDF>232389%3B36<%3B33ot1lsi http://images.snapfish.com/343%3B55%3B523232fp46%3Dot>2337%3D736%3D376%3DXROQDF>232389%3B36<%3B34ot1lsi

Thanks for the pictures TOM!

I think you should take one home…retail therapy always works…might take care of that flu thats bothering you!

It doesn’t look comfortable to me. It doesn’t bother you having it on the inside of your arm? Is it comfortable from the first time you put it on, or do you think there’s some adjustment time?

the fit probably isn’t as good as a normal watch, at least from my experience and the other guys in my store trying it on. But that aside, it fits decently enough and having the watch face on the side of your wrist is the best innovation I’ve seen in digital watches yet. Very very easy to use while training, you take a glance a lot quicker while running and while cycling in the aerobars you can see the watch at all times. I can even see it during my pull stroke swimming… The only time it’s bothered me is hammering standing in the drops on my road bike where it hit the top portion of my bar, very minor though. I love mine.

I would give mine a B+

Pros:

-easier to see on the bike and run

-I can’t see mine on the catch when swimming due to bubbles, etc. but can on the glide off the wall

-nice, big, clear display and easy to use

-easy to get used to wearing on the “side” of your wrist

-if you use the strap like Tom shows in his picture you can take off the sliding hold down wrap (right side of Tom’s picture) making it more sleek.

Cons:

-the standard size model is still a little big for my taste. I would have gone with the midsize (same capabilities) but the color options suck.

-pushing the lap button makes the watch want to turn on your wrist slightly

Conclusion: Well worth the $$ for what’s it’s made for.

I thought the mid size was very small- but I like larger watches.

You can find it for a decent discount…I ordered mine from holabirdsports.com for $49.95.
