Does anyone have any knowledge, or care to speculate as to how long from now 10 speed parts will be hard to come by? My LBS says they already cant order 10 speed shifters. I cant recall how long 9 speed lasted after 10 was introduced. thanks.
10 speed shimano was introduced in Dure Ace 2003 i think and ultegra 2004. I still have no problem with 9 speed ultegra
9 speed is still going.
Your LBS might be stretching the truth there a bit… Just look around the net or eBay to find 10 speed shifters. It’s easy, and loads of good deals can be had. My own LBS (the mechanic is incredibly honest and open) was just able to overhaul my wife’s cross bike which is all 9 speed 105 drivetrain – took a week with no problems.
I didn’t realize that. I was shocked to hear LBS say they cant order 10 speed shifters. Thanks

to be fair, that is probabky as misleading as the LBS saying they can’t get 10 spd stuff anymore.
Shimano isn’t producing any more DA, Ultegra or 105 9spd stuff anymore. However, replacement parts are plentiful on the 'net. So yes, it is still “going” but is not heavily supported by Shimano (except for some low end stuff).
10 speed stuff will be around for a long time and there is no need to convert to 11 spd (which is dumb, anyway) in the near future. Doing so is arguably more of a hssle than sticking with 10 spd, due to wheel compatibility issues.
The low end stuff of today is comparable to the high end stuff of yesterday though. If you old 9 speed dura ace derailleur or shifter failed I do believe you can buy a brand new sora to replace it.
It might even be nicer in some ways.

The difference in a derailleur is probably negligible. A shifter is another issue entirely.
Looks like cables are not hidden, and it doesn’t use the goofy thumb button so probably feels good:
.
There is a lot more to a shifter than how it looks…

I’m still running 9spd:
Good cassettes… kinda scarce. For awhile 9spd Dura Ace could be had for ~$50 but are now over $100. Been using Sram 970s and the last I bought was <$30.
Chains… plentiful and very cheap.
Chainrings… no problem.
Shifters… no problem… since I run 11spd Chorus, which happens to have the same pull per click as 9spd Shimano. But you can always get a jtek if you want to mix and match something else. For instance if I make the leap to 10spd Shimano, I can get a jtek that will shift it perfectly with my C11 shifters.
Derailleurs… no problem. All the Shimano derailleurs have the same ratio, plus Dura Ace ones last forever. I must have over 80k miles on the one I use now.

X2 on all points (for my road bike anyway).
Total BS to try and get you to buy 11 speed. Now time for a little rant on why i don’t like most LBS tactics (i worked at an large LBS ) and i think this is somewhat insulated to the bike industry?Correct me if i am wrong.
We would have daily sales meetings before work and our GM would discuss which specific products he wanted us to focus on/move and what trends he wanted us to push as well. This was not too long ago and one of these products was 11 speed, our profit margins was much higher on them due to an deal with Sram to push 11 speed. The GM tells us to push 11 speed on all customers to the point of saying we don’t have 10 speed in stock even if we did (blatant lying). We were also instructed to tell customers that 10 speed will soon be phased out and 11 speed is easier to order. The exact same story with 29’’ over 26’’ MTB wheels, or 650b MTB wheels, or tubeless, or specialized saddles, or pushing the 5 series madone because we had an higher margin than on the 4 series.
We did the exact same thing for several others products, we would undersell Felt for instance because we got an better kickback from Trek and specialized, in fact our GM told us to never place an order for an Felt even though we were an dealer for them but to tell customers they were unavailable. Similar tactics were practiced by our mechanics as well, they might have an overstock of Sram Red breaks and if a customer wanted rival they would say they only had red and could not order rival.
I understand you have to make $$$$ as an retail shop but this was unethical and i have seen the same tactics at other shops as well i have visited. This is why i buy online today and do my own mechanical work except for the unusual stuff.

That is a bastard of a system if there ever were one, but that is so awesome that someone figured out that stuff works together.
I think we are OK for a while.
I just looked the other day and I have FOURTEEN 10 speed rear wheels and only a couple of them are upgradable.
I think a lot of people are in the same boat - enough to keep some important stuff in production.

It isn’t that hard. Campy and Shimano stuff mixes well, you just have to look up the ratios and see what you can do.
So… if you are worried about nice 10spd Shimano shifters being phased, don’t worry. There are plenty of good quality options, and will be for a long time.
Find a store you trust, then stick with them.
Here are two major cycling parts distributors.
J&B Importers and Hawley USA
You don’t need a login to see what they have in stock - you just can’t see the prices. These are the same distributors that every LBS where I’ve worked order their parts. By the looks of it, you can even find 8 & 9 speed shifters with no problem.
Relying on sourcing NOS (new old stock) can be expensive. Depending on what it is.
Seems like the wheel compatibility issue with ShimaNO 11 speed will ensure 10 speed shimaNO sticks around for a while.
