Time to lower the UCI minimum weight limit?

It was 10 years ago that the UCI came up with the 6.8 kg minimum bike weight rule, and it’s time to lower it.

This illegal bike has a PowerTap hub, Garmin 705 computer with cadence sensor, water bottle cages, clinchers, 7900 components, Dura Ace pedals, and EDGE post, bars and stem.

what would be the benefit of lowering the weight limit?

how does the world become a better place?

Did they weigh your bike at nats last year? Didn’t see the start of worlds so not sure of they checked either.

Why is the world a better place with the limit currently at 6.8?

When you have to start to add weight to the bikes to make the limit by using heavier equipment, it is time to review the limits. Maybe 6.0 is more realistic now instead of 6.8

The drop in weight from 6.8 to 6 is about 1 3/4 lbs which might just be more realistic.

I do not see there being an issue with dropping the weight a bit in light of modern technology and what is currently realistic with an off the shelf bike.

I say 6.0 kg / 13.2 lbs would be more than fine and very rideable.

so you can not worry about whether to take a power meter or water bottle cage with you on a race?

hell you can even bring a radio or frame pump for fun! cool

Not sure I totally agree with your write up as those parts are pretty WW material. EDGE wheels, stem, post and bars are nice and light compared to other offerings out there. The only parts that I would say are not really WW material are the brakes, cranks and pedals but they are not crap either.

I get where you are going with the post but it is sort of a very grey area with the example you are using.

They didn’t weigh mine at Nats last year - good thing too since I was right at 14 lbs. A lot of good it did me though :frowning:
