What’s the LR liking for TV’s these days. My plasma is due for replacement, and I’m leaning towards a new LED in the 60 to 65 inch range. I’m also a big Samsung fan, but will look at others. Not interested in 3D.
I’ll be following along on this. My 15 year old rear projection is on the fritz. Was thinking about a new TV for a year or two and now I need to make a decision.
We own 4 tvs. The first two were bought solely on standing back and buying the TV with the best picture. They both happened to be samsung… the last 2 were bought based on past results.
Stick with Samsung and buy from costco, get an auto 2 year warranty and add more for the cheapest you could find. Go 60 to 65. You won’t regret it.
52-80 inch Samsung HD smart TV. . . .4K is pointless since nothing is transmitted in it. . . .Depending how you consume media I would suggest a smart TV.
I have to say I’m thrilled with my Vizio 60" 120hz smart tv. It was just over 900 out the door from Sam’s club. About 18 months old and perfecto. My girlfriend has a slightly smaller one that is 8 years old…never a problem. If not for college football and basketball I could do w/o a tv, but alas it’s my heroin. The wireless connectivity is astonishing in that tv I think it’s honestly better than the connection any other wireless device gets in my home. I only have a 3MB down plan from a small provider and it streams Netflix in perfect 1080.
I’ve been looking at the Vizio M series line as of last night.
Great reviews and a good price. 240Hz, which I want, because the only thing I watch are sports and movies.
From what I have read recently, try and stay away from edge lit LED TVs.
I need to check out the Samsung offerings as well. I have heard nothing but good things about them.
Good research. 240Hz will get you into the Smart TVs and the app offerings like Crackle, Amazon, and many others take TV to entire higher level than cable or sattelite offerings. I would also recommend a 5.1 sound bar to improve the poor speakers that come with flat screens.

That’s the exact tv I have, 60". It’s fantastic. Two drawbacks: the remote, and its connectivity to the tv, is horrible. It may not seem like a big deal but it gets very annoying having to constantly find a small square in the lower left corner that picks up the signal. The other drawback is the auto-dimming; when it’s off the lighting can be way too dark/light depending on the time of day; when it’s on it can shift way too frequently and noticeably.
Those (relatively minor) gripes aside I’m incredibly pleased with the tv. Picture quality is incredible, 3D enabled if that’s a draw, great looking design, and much cheaper than similar tv’s from the better known brands.
You may not be bothered about 3D, but it’s going to come as standard on pretty much every TV over 42". It’s like HD a few years ago - used to be a real selling point, these days I don’t think a non-HD TV even exists.
On a similar note, if I was in the market for a TV now but it wasn’t particularly urgent, I’d be tempted to wait a year and see what happens with 4K. It’s already come down dramatically in price, may just find that in another year or so it’s pretty much standard for larger screen sizes. There may not be much (any?!) content for it yet, but that will change over time. 4K on smaller TVs is pointless as your eyes simply can’t tell the difference, but on the screen size you’re looking at it would be noticeably better. Probably not worth paying a lot extra for, but if prices keep coming down then you may as well be on the latest tech. And in terms of resolution it should be pretty much the final tech - no point getting any more pixels in there when the eye can’t see them.
Definitely worth investing in a sound bar or other speaker setup though. TV speakers on large screens are dreadful. Since most people go down the additional speaker route anyway, and want their TV to be as thin as possible, there’s no point in the manufacturers even bothering to try and deliver decent in-built sound.
I forgot about checking Costco. They always have a good selection.
Thanks.
I cannot think of anything more aptly emblematic of how this country is circling the drain than the purchase of a giant TV from Costco.
Watching TV shows and movies on a laptop is way different. Completely different.
I don’t watch shows on a laptop so I wouldn’t know. I would guess that the screen is smaller? Haven’t yet seen a 60" laptop. Maybe iPhone 9 PlusPlus will be in that range. We’ll see.
