Time for a new GPS watch...on a budget

Hey all, I just wanted to get some opinions or suggestions from those more experienced.
I’ve been training with a Timex Global Trainer for the past 5 years or so. It’s been fine, but it seems like it is time to get a new watch. The GPS is kinda slow, not all the buttons work, and the water-proof seal is ineffective, so the watch gets waterlogged every time I try to swim with it.

For budgetary reasons, I’m not really considering the Garmin 920XT or Ambit 3.
I’ve been looking a lot lately at the Suunto Ambit 2, or 2S, and possibly the Fenix. I’ve read the crap out of everything online for these watches, but am still having trouble deciding.

I have a Scosche Rhytme+ HR monitor, so that’s not an issue. I do most of my training outdoors, except for winter pool and bike training. No power meter at this point. Swim metrics would be a cool plus, but realistically unnecessary.

I noticed that the Suunto Outlet store is selling the Ambit 2 and 2S for 259 and 215, respectively. My concern is that I want to move up to full Iron-distance events, so I think that means the 2S is out.

Can anyone comment on the use of a 2S for Iron-events, or make any watch suggestions that are within the same price range?

Thanks

So…if you don’t have a powermeter, why not the Forerunner 220?

Or if you hurry on the 2S, a BIN for 190.

The Forerunner 220 is really not made for triathlon at all. It doesn’t have cycling sensor support, and doesnt have any kind of navigation support which I would like to help guide me for longer rides as a I start going longer.

Thanks for the tip on the 2S.

I <3 my 310xt

Meh. I have a cycling garmin for that. I wouldn’t want to be looking at or listening for my watch to guide me. YMMV, was just curious why the preference if you didn’t have a PM.

The forerunner 310 XT will do everything you want and will let you upgrade to using a power meter in the future if you decide.

I have had mine for 3 + years with no problems.

They are pretty cheap now on Amazon.

While the 920XT might not be in your budget, there will be a LOT of used 910XTs on the market in the next couple of months. If you don’t have a problem buying used I think this is a very good option.

Yeah, agreed. I always used to recommend a 310, 500 and swim instead of a 910. The price is actually similar, but you get A LOT better customization from these single-purpose devices than a compromise of everything watch like the 910. I would normally suggest getting the 310 to start, then adding the other two once you start to itch for the added features.

Now…if the classifieds begin getting flooded with <$200 910s, then that is a totally different story.
