I notice when I mess around on the pull-up bar in the gym and just hang from the bar for a short time to stretch my shoulders, it hurts like crazy in both shoulders. It’s not like an injury pain, but like I’m stretching something way too hard. Does everyone experience this or does this indicate tight shoulder joints?
If it hurts then don’t do it. Try some shoulder stretches in which you are not hanging from your entire body weight.

Depends on where in the shoulder joint it hurts. As TC said, though, generally if there is actual pain, you shouldn’t be doing it.
What you can do is find one of the platform assist pullup stations where you have a weight counterbalancing you so your entire bodyweight isn’t in use.

So, the question was - “Does everyone experience this or does this indicate tight shoulder joints?” I take it this must be fairly unique to me.
Non swimmers tend to have tight shoulder joints. Really good swimmers tend to have very loose shoulders.
