Threshold heartrate

So, today is the first day of the Sufferfest intermediate training plan for me and, as requested i did a 20 minute all out test on monday to get my LTHR. The plan says to take the average for 20 mins as my threshold heartrate which is 167 bpm for me. That sets my zones as Tempo: 140-156 and threshold: 158-175.

I did the first session today (Angels Video) and the prescribed efforts were incredibly hard! (based on heartrate)
I had a hard time getting into the 160’s for the 7/10 efforts (the workout’s "threshold effort) and the max i got was 168 on the 8/10 (supposed to be top end threshold zone).

Now I’m kind of a racer and really got into the zone for the test, pushing hard. Did i “set my threshold too high”? or do i need to HTFU on the workouts?
Or perhaps this is all about triathletes having no top end as i felt like once i got to threshold effort i could stay on it but once i tried to go harder i blew up.

Any thoughts?

What is sufferfest that I see everyone posting about?

Yes, what you notice is normal. I tested at 168, and anything above about 150 for a sustained effort is pretty hard. I guess that’s the point.

Another note, I’m fairly fit, and now I have a power meter I realize that my heart rate lags by as much as 2-3 minutes. So I could be well past threshold in tersm of power even if my HR still says tempo effort.

Expensive?

i was about to start a similar thread.

ive been using trainer road for about a month. i have done a few ftp tests but i have been tinkering with my bikes so the equipment has been changing. now, the equipment is set so:

i did another 8 minute test this weekend. got a new ftp (higher than the last time with same setup). however, with the new ftp, my heart rate passes threshold pretty quickly (and that was just during a trainer road base workout this morning). so i switched over to heart rate view for the workout which seemed like a much better gauge.

i guess for me, i think my ftp from the 8 minute test is not indicative of my true ftp. i would try the 20 minute test, but ill wait for rubber glove on saturday during the ToS to see what happens. in the meantime ill be relying more on heart rate than power.

Yes, the combination of the Trainerroad app and the Sufferfest videos offer a dose of painful delight. I am also waiting for the start of the Tour of Sufferlandia to do a new FTP test.

As for the original question, maybe your set up was slightly different. Either way, pushing your FTP on a trainer is no pleasant task.
