A friend of mine is entered in his first pro race today in LA and I’m not going. Why? Because Tom Demerly has got me all excited about using motionbased.com and I went out and bought a Garmin FR201 yesterday. No way in hell I’m missing today’s workout when I have a new toy to play with. Anyway, I wish I could be in two places at once like Don Juan in Castaneda’s series, but I havn’t figured that out quite yet. If anybody can give me any blow by blow accounts it would be much appreciated. Lutz, you should be done swimming right about now, good luck on the bike and run, and give us a race review when you notice this thread eh?
if anyone has some results that would be awesome…
waldo and snowsill the champion couple no doubt.
Emma did, in fact, win.
Craig Alexander won the men’s. Well, that’s what he told me as he stopped and chatted with me a bit. He actually asked how I did. What a class act! Rumor has it that Waldo was not feeling well. Don’t know about Macca.
Julie Swail got fourth. As I was finishing, I spotted Julie on the course and yelled, “Go Julie” and she smiled at me. Well, I don’t think Julie never stops smiling.
Oh, and of course you all want to know how I did (yeah, right!)
In the 45-49 AG I lead Monty around most of the swim, but at the last turn bouy, he turned it on to beat me by maybe 15 seconds. I was 2, 3, 4th (who knows for sure) into T2 and proceded to suck on the run. I think I got seventh or eighth. Yes, it got hot.
Thanks and congrats on your race…
Alexander seems to be on form at the moment…Waldo and Macca - sponsor races I imagine…expect waldo has all eyes on noosa…macca - well i wonder what hes aiming at?? ![]()
So that was you swimming all over the place. You got me good on a couple of those breast kicks, but thanks for the ride. Yes it was quite hot by the time the run started for us late starters, and Matt Reed got second in the pros after winning Pacific Grove yesterday. That was pretty studly, and he actually led this race until the last couple miles I believe. Shades of what Molina used to do, doubling up on the weekends.
When you look at the results keep in mind that the pros did a flat and fast 10k, in 1 mile loops. Good for the crowd, but us age groupers had to do this very hilly, tough, and hot course. Much more difficult than last year. The swim was also very long this year. The super fast German, ex-olympian who won the relay swim went over 22 minutes. His rider was Steve Hegg, and the runner was Rod Dixon. A great team, but all those guys 15 years ago would have been smokin…Swimmer- bronze medal in 88 olympics, Hegg- Gold medal cycling 84 Olympics, and Rod Dixon- argubaly one of the greatest runners of his time, spanning over 20 years…
I ended up winning the age group and second master overall. Had a bit of a problem with finding my running shoes in T2 though. Sorry for all the foul language to those that had to listen to me, but # 1500 should be right next to # 1501 and so on. Not in the middle of the row with all the #1400’s. Look, I’m already making excuses for my shitty transition time. What a whiner I can be sometimes…
Monty,
So sorry for the kicks… completely unintentional. I couldn’t find a buoy if it had a glowing beacon and klaxon on top. Every time I sighted it seemed the buoys were in a trough. Oh well, I hoped you enjoyed the scenic tour. BTW: did you start to turn in one buoy short, then realize your error? That’s when you picked it up and lost me.
Even the water was a little too warm for the T1 suit. I had to shoot some water down through the neck a couple of times. The bike course was great except for a hidden rut on the Grand Ave. downhill. Hit that sucker so hard I thought I was going to go over the bars. Russ twisted his bars down hitting that thing.
Congratulations on another fine win.
How did Rod Dixon do? Is he still (or back) in shape?
I remember going from wearing the original Saucony Jazz to Rod Dixon Trainers. They sucked for me, and I went back to the Jazz and Tiger GTs. But I loved ole Rod.

You know that if you are going to be in good enough shape to pull a swim, you have to learn the responsibilities of sighting, course layoutt, etc., to go with your new found fitness. I think that buoy where we parted was supposed to be passed on the left, since we were heading back. We were both to the right of it, and I saw a lifeguard yelling at us to move over. I guess in your lead swimmer haze, you didn’t see her yelling. Anyway I made a quick cut to get on the other side of it, and I guess you stayed left. Good thing Charlie Crawford wasn’t there, or one of us would have been booted out… Good job, keep up the swimming. I need the company…
… I guess in your lead swimmer haze, you didn’t see her yelling…
I thought I heard her yell, “Stay on the left!” But, in my ‘haze’, who knows. I was just out of my skin I was leading you, but I felt, at any time if you wanted, you could cruise right by me (which you did in the last 300 yards or so.) Even still, I have some bragging rights… thanks.
Now, if I could only get my run back together, a problem all season, I’d have been in close contention for second. I’m happy for Leon though, as I smoke him in sprints, but he seems to have the Oly distance down pretty good - fast runner!
