I got the bike out today, first time this year. Today was the first day above freezing since Jan 4th around here, not that the cold is so bad, but the roads have been dangerous to say the least. Well, today I threw the bike in my truck and drove to an area with somewhat clear highway just so I could ride. At any rate, I was riding along thinking about how much different hills feels in real life compared to the hills on the trainer when I looked over to notice the dog sled race ! It seems to me that riding a road bike and a dog race are somewhat mutually exclusive activities . . .
You think that’s wrong? I just saw a naked, fat gay guy on Survivor. How wrong is that? And what was that I saw on (or was it off?) Janet Jackson during the Superbowl half-time? And what was up with Kid Rock CUTTING A HOLE IN AN AMERICAN FLAG AND WEARING IT? Now THAT is WRONG!
I saw something on Janet also, was it real? If it was real, I can’t really say that it was wrong . . .
OK, if someone is actually able to have dogs pull a sled through snow, I see very little reason to be on a road bike. Back to the garage with you!! OR, better yet, you could put skis under the tires, hook up some dogs to your front tire, and race the dog sled!! Who needs triathlons when you have the Iditarod (spelling???) HA!!!
Also, thanks for the advice on my post about being a newbie. Big help!!!
Yes…saw the boob too. glad to hear it wasn’t just my imagination. Can’t wait to hear the hollywood gossip circles about that one.
Agree, Kid Rock with the cut up American Flag as a poncho was definitely WRONG!
Great game though!
You think that’s wrong? I just saw a naked, fat gay guy on Survivor. Missed that, thankfully. How wrong is that? And what was that I saw on (or was it off?) Janet Jackson during the Superbowl half-time? Highlight of the game until that dumb kicker kicked the ball out of bounds at the end. And what was up with Kid Rock CUTTING A HOLE IN AN AMERICAN FLAG AND WEARING IT? He’s always got the flag on him or he’s wearing it or something. Just his way of proclaiming his patriotism. Now THAT is WRONG! I don’t see anything wrong with it.

I agree. It’s no different than putting a flag on your bike, or wearing a flag colored jersey. A flag is just colored cloth, nothing holy or special about it. So Kid Rock cut a piece of cloth and wore it as a poncho. Big deal. It is what that flag represents that’s important, not its physical state.
**It is what that flag represents that’s important, not its physical state. **
If I wear a satanic t-shirt, I am not simply “wearing a pentagram” as if I am a fan of geometry. If I wear a shirt with a racist slur on it, it is not merely “just letters” or “just a term”.
When you wear the piece of cloth known as the flag as clothing, you are wearing what it represents as a piece of clothing. There is no seperating something from what it represents.
While I don’t want to see you get kicked out of the country or imprisoned, I would like for folks to possibly consider the amount of people that died so the flag “would not touch the ground” (figuratively). They make a lot of clothes that have R & W stripes and stars on them, that aren’t cut up flags.
Editing to correct some things: What the flag represents is your right to wear it, burn it, wipe your butt with it, use it as a blanket, no matter who agrees or disagrees with it.
Freedom is about allowing others to do things that you may disagree with as long as they don’t infringe on your rights. Start the patriotic music.
For the original thread starter … Dude, if while riding you see a dog sled team, a snowmobile, or a polar bear … turn around and go home. If you won’t do it for yourself, do it for your penis
Actually, TTT, i believe the bible is just a book:). The bible is a collection of books that were hand picked by councel serving under a corrupt pope some 300 years after jesus died. There’s a lot of good stuff in there, but it most certainly wasn’t written by god (or should it be God? hmm) and is therefore subject to human error. You can learn a lot from the bible, just like you can learn alot from a number of other books.
I too come from a military family, but i find it shallow and misplaced when people make a fuss over flags touching the ground or being diplayed in other non-traditional ways. Lance has worn the flag on numurous ocassions, no one throws a fit over that.
Funny you mention the flag colored clothing though, as that is also technically frowned upon by those who know the flag honor code.
I love this country dearly, but I will burn a flag in front of my state capitol the day they outlaw flag burning. Just the same i did help aid some other people in “assisting” some assholes off of our campus when they were burning a flag this past 9/11. It’s all in the intent. Kid rock was not intending to insult what the flag stands for. My burning a flag if that action is outlawed is in fact honoring what I believe our flag represents. Contrast that to some assholes burning a flag to insult the country that is allowing them to live and become better educated here.
Re: The Bible – I meant from the perspective of Christians. I should have pointed that out. I was making the analogy Flag:American as Bible:Christian, which upon reflection isn’t a real good analogy. I do know there are “other books” that were “left out” of the Bible, but I have never read them. Some have encouraged me too, but I am still studying the ones that are in the Bible.
As for the flag … Shallow? Misplaced? Perhaps. … I’m not for athletes draping the flag for something as trivial as winning an athletic competition. But, I can understand how someone would “do it with pride”.
Wearing starred & striped clothing being different than wearing clothing made from the real flag certainly seems trivial. Hey, I never said all my opinions were deeply based in rational thought. LMAO.
I never really considered what would take to get me to burn the flag. I guess if I thought it was the most effective way I could get my point across, I would (like when they outlaw fast food j/k). Possibly if my family members were fighting and getting killed in a war I did not agree with, maybe I would out of anger.
A little trivia:
What book is stolen more than any other book?
The Bible
Only on Slowtwitch can you go from riding your bike in the cold, to janet Jackson’s Boob, then to the Bible in a single thread…
I love this forum!

If someone wants to wear a flag, I just dont see an issue with that…if that same person wants to wipe their ass with the flag…time for a beat down.
You all keep talking about this boobie? This was during a thing that you all call “Football”? What is this thing, Football?
“Football” is a sport in which my wife and I drink Harpoon IPA and swear at the television for 3 hours. Actually, now that I think about it, that summarizes all of our telelvision viewing.
Football is the reason why my son knows how to say “C’mon Bears”, “Touchdown” (rare) and “Daddy, No Growling!”
.
Yeah, but you must regale him with tales of the beat-down they gave the Pats in SuperBowl '86. Just like all things, the home team championships come in cycles. The only reason we’re getting it now is that none of our other teams have won anything since the Celtics took the championships in the early '80’s. Being a Boston fan is an exercise in self-abuse. You build yourself up, you get disappointed.
Personally, I’m not a huge baseball fan. It gets in the way of following the Tour.
Having spent 6 years with the USMC, and about 22 years with the Boy Scouts, as both a Scout and adult leader, I do know more than a little about flag etiquette. Wearing “the flag (meaning an actual flag)” as clothing, or cutting it is considered a violation of the Flag Code (not a law, BTW!). Yes, when Lance or the US Hockey Team wrap the flag aorund themselves like a cloak, that is disrespectful. Wearing clothes with a flag motif is not the same as using an actual flag, so that is considered okay. I do agree that there should be no laws against disrespect to the flag, even burning it–because freedom is what it stands for after all.
Actually, I thought the whole half-time show was sickeningly over the top with all the crotch-grabbing, tit-baring, vulgar-language rapping stuff in addition to the flag business. It all comes back to how things that once werre considered in poor taste and not done in public are now flaunted in everyones’ face every day. I could just imagine millions of people around the world watching that mess and thinking that is what the US is really like.
For the Marines in the audience–Do you know the difference betwwen the Marines and the Boy Scouts? Boy Scouts have adult leadership.
I keep hearing and seeing people express concerns that the rest of the world will think poorly of the U.S.A because Janet Jackson flashed her boob during the halftime show. I find this hard to believe. Have you ever seen what is aired on television outside of the U.S.A.? Our television is pretty strongly regulated and watched by ultra-conservative censorship…oops I mean lobby groups. If you get the opportunity watch a European/Australian/South American game show or reality show and you will see that what we watch is rather mild in comparison. Also bear in mind that the benchmark for international entertainers is to “make it” in the U.S.A. market, the rest of the world loves our music/entertainers. I would be very surprised if the rest of the world was truly “shocked”.
Now as for my personal feelings on the halftime show. I thought it was in poor taste, not because I saw a boob, but because it was lame in general. None of the entertainers played anything new, hell Janet’s song she opened with is something-like 15 years old. And as far as the boob, it was clearly a desperate attempt to generate “publicity” prior to the release of her new album.
Also the lame attempts to “apologize” after the fact are horribly transparent. Come on! A costume malfunction, she had a friggin pastie on!! We’re not that dumb, are we?
