Things you'll find on bikes in my garage... review of Fi'zi:k Arione saddle

Product Review of Fi’zi:K Arione CX K:ium Saddle – By Steve Larsen

Saddle selection is obviously a very individual endeavor. What works for me may not work for you; however there are certain characteristics I think everyone should look for in a saddle. These attributes are all found on the Fizik Arione CX K:ium saddle that can currently be found on all of my bikes. I have tried many saddles over the years, but since first riding the Arione upon its release a few years ago, I keep gravitating back to it after the brief instances that I have tried something new.

Proper bike fit for triathletes is a much debated topic, but for me a good fit starts with the three main contact points between body and bike, and none is more important than the seat. One of the most common mistakes I see triathletes make in regard to fit; is pointing down the nose of the saddle to compensate for an overall poor position on the bike. Typically the pressure and discomfort the athlete may be addressing is exacerbated and ultimately it will lead to a host of other problems. With a few exceptions, pro cyclists and most pro triathletes (certainly the ones that go fast on the bike) ride with a level saddle. The design of the Arione CX makes this adjustment easy as it is one of the flattest seats on the market from tip to tail.

Although everyone has a spot on their saddle where they produce maximum power, course conditions and varying terrain make this a moving target of sorts. The Arione CX addresses this better than most saddles by allowing the rider a wide range of motion fore / aft on the seat. For me, this is another key attribute that sets the Arione CX apart. When really hammering I tend to gravitate forward on the saddle like most; but during the course of an Ironman event I will sit in many different positions allowing some muscles brief recovery while recruiting others. The saddle is quite firm and if the rider is fit correctly, I believe this will help them maximize both power and comfort. My experience with overly soft seats has been less positive and although at first glance the Arione CX may not look like a plush ride, I have found that if set up correctly, it definitely is.

Who can benefit from the Fizik Arione CX k:ium?

Anyone that is not enjoying the saddle they are currently riding. Saddles are not an area to be frugal. Enjoying the bike and riding fast, all start with being comfortable.
