Things I loved and did not love about IM Luvull

Hola triathlete amigos,

I have to say right off the bat. This was my third inaugral race. I have had the good the bad and the ugly. I have been in M DOT and INDY iron races. This was the most organized event I have ever seen. The volunteers made the race, as they do in most, but these guys were the most “educated” volunteers I have seen. I liked the walk through with my person. She was knowledgable and helpful. Not only that, but on race day they were awesome, helpful and some quite speedy. I saw a lady run down a pro on the run course to get him coke that he missed. So OK here is my 2 cents.

Loved the swim-Since I have grown up near the river and live fairly close now, I hold real awe at its beauty and raw power. Swimming an IM without a wetsuit well…not many can say that. I was a little antsy after the practice Saturday, but once at the race Sun. I felt very calm and swam hard. Finished the swim in 1:10. Current was not that much of an advantage on the return compared to Saturday. I tried to avoid folks who looked like it was a hard day or worse. I noticed some people panic from the moment they hit the water. KUDOS KUDOS to the race director who had a viable plan B for the swim and the confidence to implement it. I thought it was a smart, intuitive fix for an almost no win situation. Maybe folks did learn something after Utah…twice.

Hated the swim-The Ohio ranges from calm to white caps depending on the wind. I saw people during warm up doing the endless pool deal. Some real panic was noted, especially in my own mind when I flashed back to IM Utah. Eventhough I had a good swim there at least I had a wetsuit in Utah. The taste of the river was a little “nutty mixed with boating fuel”. My googles had some of the fuel in it and man did it sting. The walking distance from the original start made it about a mile and a half walk from the hotel. I felt like we should have had an additional time for this leg of the race! Also waiting in line with not enough port-a-johns spaced out by the line was an issue for people not wanting to lose their place in line. Floating crap/debris/cows/bodies/ insert your debris choice here…not that bad but it is the stuff you can’t see that will get you, not the nine foot catfish. Jury is still out since I am waiting to see if I grow an extra appendage over the next few days. Maybe I will end up like a platypus? Think about it! I did have a rash the next day after practice however, and a few of us did have stomach issues.

Loved the Transitions- All were smooth and the help was spot on. They were flawless.

Hated the transitions- I got nothing…q.v. above.

**Loved the bike-**Anything in KY by the river will have similar terrain. This was actually a lot flatter than many spots along the Ohio, especially the greater Cincy area. Some of the views were in beautiful horse country, not as pretty as Lexington/Paris though. The course was tough but not crazy. This course is a lot like Wisconsin but the rollers are not as steep as IM Moo. Bike 6:09, a little slower than I would have liked but within reason. I saw some farmers actually getting into the road to remove debris and dropped gear. Very cool! Hopefully this community will not become tired of IM and have farmers blocking cyclists with tractors or folks dropping tacks…dare to dream.

Hated the bike- The two bridges were a pothole mess, especially since one was at the bottom of a 40 mph descent…twice. US 42 return was also a little bumpy but nothing major. Saw folks who did not know the course almost take out folks on the descents only to then block them on the climb…bastards. Ha. Playing in traffic for some folks was an issue I saw pros blocked by cars that were just trying to get into LaGrange. Nothing purposeful. The scenery is a little bland at times. Seen one horse…seen you get the point. Although not as many horse farms as I would have thought along the course like the horsey hundred in central KY.

Loved T2 - Above still applies!

Loved the run- It was flat. I still managed to do it slowly though. Maybe I should run more? Volunteers were extremely helpful. Police were great. Even heard one of them talking about doing Placid last year.

Hated the run- At time the scenery was soooo boring. We did not run past the cool stuff like I had thought. Churchill? We saw some stables, Papa John stadium was way the heck over there. 4:58…geez. I used to be able to run. Maybe it’s that whole need to run more thing?

Loved the Finish-As far as finishing venues go this one was the coolest next to Canada. Canada has the atmosphere though. This was a great way to frame the finish at Louisville!

Hated the finish-OK I scoped out a cool Mexican restaurant “Tengo Sed=I have thirst” which was wholly appropriate for me. I was planning to perch myself there to watch the last finishers come in. The upstairs places were not open…talk about lost opportunity for $$$$.

Just Plain Hated-Picking up the bike after. What a walk after an ironman. Fortunately my wonderful wife and two teenage boys did it for me. I was feeling for those at the race by themselves. Been there and know that special kind of suffering post race trying to coherently gather your gear in a physical and mental funk.

If you would pay to have someone bring your bike and gear back to your hotel e-mail me here ralenkotpar@hotmail.com

I would do this race again in a heartbeat since my chances of getting back to Canada are nil. I would not do this race if you can’t deal with the heat, rollers, or can’t swim without a wetsuit.

Cheers!

Sure thing. It really was cool especially given the fact that it was a first year race. The website really gave me doubts about the organization, but man did they prove me wrong. Oh I forgot the medals are cool. A horseshoe design!

I agree all the negative vibes on slowtwitch every since they announced ironman louisville and especially the week before…
I thought it was very well run… MY biggest negative… NO FINISHER SHIRT… Lot’s were talking while getting massage and next morning where are the finisher shirts… They gave us a shirt at registration but heck it didn’t say finisher on it…
But thats about it… WTC did a great job…
Did you notice days before they had ice containers placed out on the bike course I counted 4 or 5 I think while driving the course.
Those big freezer type things you see at stores where you buy ice. They were prepared for the heat for sure…

Great event…

Yeah I have to say that asking for someone to pay for a finisher shirt it the lamest thing. I forgot about that one. Wen tto get stuff today and just said, “Nah, don’t need it.” The line through it was too Disney like.

The shirt and hat given to us in the goodie bag were cool, but how many of you would have liked a finisher shirt?

Not me - I actually like the one we got better! But, since it has become the “norm”, I can see how people were “surprised” to not get one. This was my first IM branded event that I spent zero, nadda, dollars in the event stores. I have a feeling there is a direct correlation between number of IMs done and money spent in the event stores (and I’m NOT a very experienced IM racer)

Yeah i agree. I spent nada after the race, but honestly probably would have for something cool.

Honest question from a guy relatively new to triathlons, but seasoned in other endurance sports:

Why is a shirt that says “finisher” such a big deal? Doesn’t the event logo, date, etc. on the shirt identify you as a participant? I personally would never wear a shirt for a race I didn’t finish. That’s just bad form! I see “finisher” written on a shirt and I wonder why that eight-letter word is so important.

What is the typical finish rate percent for an Ironman? Most of the ultramarathons in my background are around 60-70%, many are as low as 35-40%. I never see the guys who DNF wearing the race shirts from their goodybag. And if they want to, let 'em.

Just curious what the general thought is.

Nice write-up on Louisville, by the way. I was one of the volunteer catchers at the finish line. Thanks for the kind words!

No! Thank you Tom. You guys were so good. You know I think that folks expect it since many races do this now. You get an event sirt and when you finish you get your medal and a finisher shirt. Canada has a finisher hat too. Kudos to the guy that does the hats (Louisville.)Those are awesome. I had an issue with the clasp on my IMC hat a few months after the race and he fixed it right away. I ran in it yesterday.

I think that everyone involved with Louisville did a great job! Sure there were some things that could have been better, but don’t we say that about all events. The volunteers were top notch all the way around. I stopped for the rest room once and came out with two fresh waters and a gatorade… just like in NASCAR. The crowd support was great and will only get better. The people of LaGrange weren’t sure what to expect but soon got into the swing of things, I can’t wait to see what they do next year.
Does anyone know who the guy was dressed up as the Devil? He was a total scream and welcome release on the climbs.
As far as a swim without a wetsuit goes… get over it! If you can’t hack the swim don’t do the distance. I would have never dreamed of entering this event and relying on my wetsuit to get through.

Oh yeah - forgot about the guy in the full red devil suit with pitchfork! My guess is that he is a roadie/TdF fan since he was near a little hill (pretty small if I remember) like the famous guy always present near the summit of some famous TdF climbs. Pretty cool I thought!

Yeah I gotta agree about the swim. Be ready for anything in the water since the swim is the only compulsory finish! I learned that at Utah with the really tough conditions. Every IM I have done since I train ike I will not be able to wear it or for worst case scenario.

First off, it is not pronounced “luvull.” Us locals are the only ones who really now how to pronounce it! It is pronounced just as it is spelled - Louis ville.

Although I did not participate and had serious doubts about the race here, after going down to the bike / run transition for a few hours Sunday afternoon and watching the action, I changed my mind. The race was very well organized. The volunteers did a flawless job from what I saw.

The run course had BORING written all over it since the day it was designed. They would have done much better to incorporate a lot of what the KY Derby Festival mini marathon / marathon use in late April. That is, first off, doing the loop and hills in Iroquois Park (the IM marathon turned around at the entrance to the park at the corner of Southern Parkway and Newcut Rd.) And also, GO THROUGH CHURCHILL DOWNS like in the Derby Festival marathon. That really would of said Louisville. Papa Johns stadium is nothing great, just your run of the mill college stadium. And I am sure most competitors never were aware they ran through the University of Louisville campus.

All in all, I think the race my have a home here for awhile!

They were even setting up for rush! I got a kick out of seeing all the kids out there just doing their thing while we ran by.

Are you really a local? I spent about 8 years living in Louisville between college and post college and I have never heard a local call it Louis-ville. I have heard most people call it Lou-uh-vull.

Rod, that was Marcus Moran, local roadie and bike techie, law school student, expectant father, and fiance’ of my coach. He was going to wear a leopard thong, but he got talked out of it.

Glad everyone enjoyed the race.

LOL! Of course you know him. So, when are you going to run for mayor of L’ville?

Everytime time I saw you at the expo, race, wherever, you seemed to know someone, shaking hands, etc. I see a bright political future for you!

Like it wouldn’t be the same for you if there was an IM in Cincy? Actually it was hard getting into race mode while in my hometown. Thankfully, I had people staying with me since Tues night and that kind of got me into the mode. And someone gave out my number during the lunch yesterday so I had about 200 people calling for rides to the airport!
