They're off in Wanaka

Follow the race with updates here: http://www.challenge-wanaka.com/results.html
.

I’ll be cheering for Grant (triathlonshots here on ST), Petr, and a few other familiar individuals.

I’ll be cheering for the following team on merit:
IM Talk Podcast (good lads all 3 of them)

and the following teams solely for their names:
One wheel short of a unicycle
Two Outies & an Innie (2 guys and a girl)
and, ahem,
Cunning Stunts (only in NZ!)

Ride like the wind Chris and Hillary!!

go hills!

Oh yeah, Hillary too!

Chris wins!! Super happy for him. Hopefully Justin D. can hang in for the podium.

And go Hillary!

I saw the runner for one wheel short of unicycle heading out when I was at the finish line earlier today.

And here is some inspiration from the race:

The 73 year old guy on the left(Garth) did the race today in just under 15hrs.

The 230 years of ‘life experience’ team on the right completed it in just under 17hours.

The cut-off was 17 1/2 hours and the conditions got a bit more windy as the day went on, so these guys did a harder race in that respect as a result.

I wish I’ll be able to race like that when I am seventy something old!! Hats off for these guys…

And if I’m still racing in 2048 I might even qualify for something.

Many congrats to Chris for his win and Hillary for her third! What a great way to start 2009. We are proud of you both. Relax and enjoy your spoils!

Dave

Good on Garth!

Are there results anywhere?

the wanaka site must be flooded with traffic. im having a tough time viewing results. anyone else have a different link?

The support out on the course was great. And did think of my other support good wishes on the bike(thanks). Well 5hrs and 45mins is alot of time. I was giving it a good effort based on current training so averaged close to 32km/hr.

Chris MacDonald did it in 4hrs 45mins and Justin Daer set a new cycle course record time, and Chris was only 17 seconds back. The wind certainly picked up as the day went on, but these are fast times.

Here are a couple more images:

Chris Macdonald 1st, Keegan Williams 2nd and Petr Vabrousac 3rd(less than a minute from 2nd).

4th, Justin Daer,
5th, Marc Pscebizen,
6th, Luke Dragstra.

Gina Ferguson takes it out and 5 mins faster than last year.

And some interesting news yesterday was that they will be holding a ‘Challenge Wanaka’ 1/2 iron-distance race on the same day.

Will have a whole buch more photos up on my website in the next day or 2.
