In September we lost our male Pyrenees. Today we lost our girl. She lost her leg in December of 2012 to chondrosarcoma. It took her all of 3 days to shrug it off and get on with life. We found out her cancer came back about the time our boy passed. Maia was the definition of pure goodness. She was a mountain of a dog that could destroy anything in her path, but she still needed her mommy.
She went to IMFL on the first of November to volunteer with us and dipped her toes in the gulf. She got to go to Savannah to see her mom finish the marathon that she so loyally helped her train for by laying next to the treadmill on every single run. Less than 48 hours after we got back she has passed. She never let on just how bad she was doing.
Dude, that totally sucks. You have my deepest sympathies. I have often said the terrible tragedy of our faithful companions is that while they give us some of our best moments, they depart this world far too quickly. Best wishes to you and the family.
So sorry for your loss. Great-looking dog. We have 14 and 13 year old yellow labs and I’m sure we’re going to lose one or both soon. I’m sure I’ll be a blubbering mass when the first one goes. You have my deepest sympathies.
My sympathies, we had to put down one of our dogs in April. She was 15-16 and had lived with us for 11 years, so painful to say goodbye, but a relief to know she is no longer in any pain.
Sorry for the double whammy. Good that you shared the experience of the dogs with the wife. The two of you can certainly share the loss, but tempered with the joy they brought you, and you to them.
Dude, I’m so, so, sorry. That is one really cute pup, and it sure looks like you treated her right, all the way to the end. She was lucky to have puppy parents as good as you guys.
I know the feeling. Been there, done that a few times. After I put my last dog down due to cancer with him dying in my arms after the final needle from the vet I told myself that was it - no more dogs. Three months later we got a new puppy.
We knew the boy was going to pass and had arranged for a puppy since last Spring. When we found out our girl’s cancer had returned (2 days after bringing the boy puppy home) we were able to contact the breeder and got his sister.
So 10 or 12 years from now I’ll be in the same situation of losing both dogs close to each other. But the only alternative to losing dogs is to never have known them. And that would suck more.
Some people talk about that one dog they owned long ago and how good that dog was. Since I was 17 I’ve owned 6 dogs. Maia was the first to pass young. And every single one of those dogs was just an amazingly good dog. And each was unique, they have all had such distinct personalities. Ask me in 40 years who my favorite dog was and I won’t be able to pick. And the 2 puppies are already showing the potential to be fantastic.
Honestly I’m not really that fond of many people, and chances are people are aware of that. So I need to have dogs in order to have friends.
In my life I have had six dogs. My dad had to put down the three that I grew up with and as an adult I have done the same with two. Our current dog is six yrs old so is half way through his life if he lives to old age. Its the downside of dog ownership. But its better that we outlive them than the other way way around. You`ll get another dog, never forget any of the others and love each just as much.
sucks to hear about that. We lost our 15yo mutt back in June while we were on vacation. My wife is convinced that he didn’t want her to have to see him pass.
You have my condolences. I know acutely well the life and love that a pet, and a dog in particular, brings to a person or family. Their unconditional love is a model for all of us to emulate. Their outlook on live is a lesson to all: “What, I lost a leg? BFD, I got three more! Let’s par-tay!”
Your girl was a happy appearing, fun-loving, big, white mound of fluff who was much loved. She’ll be there waiting for you - patiently, expectantly and excitedly - for that one day when, together once more, you’ll cross the Rainbow Bridge united, never to be separated again.
