Getting a bit unwieldy, so we’ll see how this thread method works.
Questions:
What circumstances would lead to Darryl and Carol getting separated? I find it hard to imagine Darryl letting Carol get taken without wanting that to happen: either he knew she needed medical care he couldn’t provide, or she’s faking it (doubtful) to get inside the hospital. We can guess that D&C followed the car back to near the hospital. Some observation would reveal that nobody except (it appears) a few “cops” ever go in or out, so they must realize that storming the place is out of the question (no inside info). Plus, they no doubt see the sniper on the rooftop. So how to get in? See 1. above.Do D&C observe Beth’s escape attempt? If so, then they know that Noah is on Beth’s side, and would meet up with him. Perhaps that is why Carol went in? Still doubtful strategy.
As for who is with Darryl at the end of the previous episode,
It isn’t Carol, or if it is she’s in bad shape. No way she hangs back in those circumstances? It could be Noah alone, or Noah with Beth, or Beth alone.
I think Noah is key at this point, hence the entire episode leaving Beth (almost) where she started: they needed to show that Noah is a good guy (taking a beating for Beth) and trustworthy. So Darryl and Carol meet him and work out a plan.
I guess next week we are on the road with Glenn/Maggie and co.

Doesn’t it seem more plausible that Darryl and Carol got separated essentially the same way Daryl and Beth did? That is, they encountered some of the cops, cops grabbed Carol up and drove off with her, and Daryl couldn’t keep up because he’s on foot. (I know he and Carol started off with a car, but he appears to have lost that by now.)
How close do we figure the church is from Atlanta?

If we’re operating on the assumption that the producers are playing with “time jumps” again, it could be any combination of the three. But my money says it’s just Noah.
My thought was that I can’t see Darryl not dying to prevent Carol from being taken again.
As for only Noah with Darryl, I think that would make sense if Darryl determines that Darryl can’t get Carol by himself, so he goes back to the group. Hello, road trip!
I like your idea for #3. At first, I would have thought that Daryl would have to be the one to go in to save Beth, but then I thought about what Noah said about them only taking in weaker people. I could totally see them taking Carol in because they assume she’s weak. That would be awesome if Carol just tears s**t apart in there!

(not to continue the mutual admiration society)
Excellent point about weakness. They don’t just put stuff (Noah’s comment about how he got in) in there like that for atmosphere.
I’m hypothesizing that Daryl and Carol tracked the car back to Grady, but the place is nearly impossible to enter. While on the outside, they encounter Noah; either through chance, or upon witnessing the escape attempt.
Carol seems all too willing to put her life on the line to help the others, now that she has little else to live for. I can see her volunteering to be “picked up” by the cops in order to gain entry.
As for the previewed return to the church, I predict that it’s Daryl with Beth. Carol goes down during the next escape attempt, and Noah is already hobbled, so his run will be short-lived.
For me, I’m having the most difficutly resolving the timeline between Beth’s kidnapping, the whole Terminus reunion, and then the church reunion. I need to Gantt chart this thing.
Settle down people. Carol has everything under “control”.
I wasn’t super excited about the pacing of the episode - the timing seemed off (days, weeks, etc.) due to how long it’s been since Beth was on the show to where Carol/Daryl are now. Also, they were very indirect as to the “debt” system for the patients - I thought that was the first time the writers were trying to be smart this season and failed.
Also, in the end Beth and Noah are running through a parking lot full of walkers AND the cars used by the police. That makes no sense unless the cops like playing with zombies when they get home from work (or kidnapping, whatever you want to call it).
Just a very circumstantial episode that felt very off-pace compared to the rest of this season. I still enjoyed it, but I hope they put closure on Beth/Carol very quickly.
And yes, I think Daryl is with Noah and they sent Carol in as a Trojan horse and are now getting the whole team together to get them out.
Something occurred to me just now: Officer Friendly (Rick Grimes) versus Officer Bitch (Dawn Lerner) when Darryl comes back and gets the group to launch the assault to rescue Carol and Beth. I was wondering who would be best to take down Dawn; Beth seemed natural but she already got that slimy cop and Noah just doesn’t seem the type. Rick seems like a likely candidate for a future episode. Pretty sure he’d be damned angry to hear Noah’s description of what has gone on in that hospital. Heck, he could even know (of) her.
the whole episode bugged me, the crisp uniforms and haircuts, wearing full armed police belts, the year after year self-sufficiency of the hospital (energy/food/water) . . . the acting was generally awful. How does Rick and the Gov’ner not already spot all these cross painted police cars running around Georgia . . . why doesn’t the hospital and police staff have all that ‘stuff’ and not a single police radio for communication? the episode did not make sense to me.

I agree. It could make sense if there is some bigger picture thing going on that can explain it, but from what was shown it appears there are a handful of people living this really high on the hog existence with a few “indentured” servants, far too few to keep everything so orderly or to support the elites. It almost felt like Beth was in some sort of bizarro world. Seems like it would be easy to overpower the elites and take over or get out.
I’d say the whole area of food has a very schizophrenic treatment in the whole series.
The power thing bugs me too, they’re a couple years out now right (seems like they’ve gone through 2 winters)? Where’s the juice coming from for the hospital?

Not to diminish the practical concerns over the treatment of post-apocalyptic resource usage, a hospital in a major metro area likely has a serious generator system with a lot of fuel. Seeing as they are likely running < 10% (SWAG) of typical usage (notice how dark the halls typically were, as if they were only using light from the windows for illumination), that could last a long time. They did show a series of large batteries running one of the medical devices in one scene.
Although we didn’t see many of them, one comment in the show was that “the wards keep the officers happy” or something like that. Beth and Noah were “wards,” and there are likely a bunch of them.
The CDC was on their last drops after only a couple of months.
I don’t know the first thing about it but it would seem to me it would take on awful lot of fuel to keep things running for a couple of years considering early on they would likely have had a whole hospital to power for some time before they would taper off as less and less of it was used. Not to mention someone to fix the generators and the necessary parts when they broke.
Ain’t the interweb cool.
I found a site talking about a major hospital that requires 10 generators using about 5000 liters of diesel fuel a day to maintain normal operations.

The doctor did mention that some test would require lots of power, so they recognize that power is a scarce resource. The CDC guy never left the building, and was running lots of computers 24/7. One can reasonably assume that the hospital people would have done some fuel runs.
Or one can assume that since this is a post-apocalypse fantasy series not all details will mesh with an expected reality, and focus less on lawn mowing and more on who is behind Darryl.

Yep. This is what happens when they go off script. There is no hospital in the comics. There is no Daryl in the comics and Comic Carol is a head case who kills herself in the prison by walking up to a walker they have staked in the yard and letting it bit her neck.
Don’t get me wrong – I love tv Carol and Daryl. But, this episode jumped the shark a bit.
However, via Noah, it set up how the group gets to the next comic location.
How do they get there in the comics? Just out of curiosity how far behind the comic is the TV series?
They simply find it on their travels towards D.C. There is no Terminus in the comics. They are pretty far along in the comics, but, they keep taking detours like the hospital.
I may be out to lunch, but I think the hospital people keep the walkers around the building to keep people from trying to escape. They are easy to herd if you need to get to a car and the sniper is there as a “just in case” lookout while people come and go.

I think you are absolutely correct. Consider the fact that there were walkers trapped inside the outer gate of the hospital. They are using the walkers as security to keep people in and keep people out.
