The triathlon in Lake Placid (NOT the IM, but that weekend)

hi-going to LP to watch, volunteer and not sign up…it seems to me when I have been before, there is an evening sprint tri that a local club/shop puts on, very informal, not even sure if they charge any entry fee.
Does anyone have info about this? Id like to know what time and when to be at Mirror Lake. It looked like a fun thing to do if not doing the IM-thanks.

You should contact High Peaks Cycles. They are the ones who put on the low key events in town.

Usually Monday nites 6 pm at Mirror Lake put on by High Peaks…this has been going on for around 23 years if I recall correctly.

I did that race a couple times in 82’ or 83, so a very old race indeed. It used to be followed up with a pot luck dinner at the brew house in town too, my kind of town for sure… And swimming in that lake with no wetsuit was almost heart stopping… I did a world qualifyier there in 03 I think, and even with wetsuits they shortened the swim to 500 from 1500. I was not happy with that of course, but it was cold for sure…

I guess that puts these Monday nite tris to 28 years old.

I’ll be in town tomorrow and ask the owner of High Peaks, Brian Delaney how long this has been going on.

As a point of reference, Brian Delaney has done every single Ironman Lake Placid, even though he’s working his shop till pretty well midnite the day before the race getting our bikes tuned up for the big day.

Monty, its going to be a treat to actually not do that Ironman this year and be in town spectating and supporting some of the guys and girls in my training group. Maybe I should spend some time working as a wrench-guy in Brian’s store as payback for all the years his shop has supported tris in that town.

At least 28 years as the race had been going before I got there…ANd it will be a blast to be on the sidelines, ironman stuff just shuts down the pre race fun times. When I was there in 03 the brew pub was still there, so I would do your wrenching all day with a sign that says" Meet me at the pub to pay your bill!!" I know Emilio and I shut that place down after the race, and were only an hour away or so from last call the nite before! They make a good malt there…

Have fun, other than San Diego, it may be the most historic tri town with the 2nd longest history in the states here…
