The Tour and drugs

I dunno about anyone else but I’m getting tired of Sherwin and Liggett telling us how clean the tour is this year and that the riders have all signed a pledge…whooopdedooo!

Looks like the doctors may be out in front again?

Dave

Millar is doping again. Sun sensitivity is a common side effect of steroid use. That might be speculation, but he has lost the benefit of the doubt.

Sun sensitivity is also a common side effect of being Scottish.

I hear what you’re saying…wouldn’t surprise me if there all doping - but I seriously doubt that it’s with steroids.

I completely agree. I was watching yesterday and to hear them tell it the entire tour is suddenly clean. I’m currently reading the “From Armstrong to Landis” book and I have to say that either ALL of those people are flat-out lying, or there is something to the accusations. I know that there are some people on ST who say they’ll never believe rider X doped unless they personally saw him dope. If that’s their standard they’ll never believe anyone doped (unless he admits it.) I also remember a certain someone telling us all that he knew for a fact beyond a doubt that a certain rider friend of his never doped (despite apparently not asking him about it.) We all know how that turned out. That said, I totally understand why some normally moral riders would turn to r-EPO etc. It would be horribly frustrating, to say the least, to feel like you can’t compete in your profession because everyone else is juiced. Add to that having access to doctors who can help you do it “safely.” None of us really know what we’d do in that situation unless we were in that same situation (except people who aren’t being honest with themselves, I guess.)

Edit: removed the unsubstantiated accusation of doping against a particular cyclist that was in OP. I wasn’t commenting on that part anyway.

While I’m not ready to gush that all the riders deserve a Boy Scout merit badge for honesty I am ready to entertain the possibility that this may be one of the more “clean” Tours in years.

I think there is a heightened sense of paranoia (however you spell it) among the riders due to the Landis affair and all the other drug controversies.

I’ve done steroids (yes, twice, and no I wasn’t breaking any rules or competing at anything)

I don’t recall the slightest bit of sun sensitivity nor do I recall anyone in the intarweb steroid underground ever mentioning this issue. I do know a lot of side effects of steroids are made up or exaggerated. That sounds like one of them. (note: acne and hair loss and getting huge instantly are not made up!)

Well I got it first hand from a medical professional…the missus.

I bet a few of these drugs are on the banned substances list.

Does she prescribe steroids often? I’m of course not familiar with your wifes medical background but usually medical doctors don’t know a whole lot about steroids since very few of them can legally do anything with them.

Also, steroids can be tested for, so I’m not sure how he would get away with it.

Unsubstantiated? the rider in question has freely admitted that he has used drugs and lied about it. I think there’s a little substance to my accusation. Any rider who has been caught and reinstated has lost the presumption of innocence. But I respect your rules Dan and I’ll not single out individual athletes again.

“Unsubstantiated? the rider in question has freely admitted that he has used drugs and lied about it.”

…for which he served a suspension. you’re now accusing him of a new infraction, and you’re doing so without substantiation. how long have you been a member of the forum community? you’re just now coming to understand the rules?

We can quibble about what constitutes substance, but I think the fact that the guy has been caught cheating and lying about it before qualifies.

And you’ll have to forgive me Dan but there are so many threads accusing Barry Bonds of drug use that I wasn’t sure just what exactly the rules were.

I’ll set my drug accusation default at nobody just to be on the safe side.

Well everyone was stunned last year when the drug of choice of the 70s, testosterone, was still in use. I have little doubt that steroids are still being used by endurance athletes; runners, cyclists, and others, and that the doctors just have better masking agents and better cycling regimens to cover their tracks. The big advances in PED use have not been in new drugs its beein in ways to hide the same old culprits from testing.
