The ST Nov 15- Jan 02 Zero Pound Weight Gain Challenge: The Best Way to Get in Shape is to Stay in Shape

OK, who is in. The easiest way to lose pounds is to never gain them in the first place. With US Thanksgiving coming up and Xmas and New Years, the Michelin tire on the midsection can easily present itself by Jan 2.

How hard have you worked to have that sixpack? You can blow it now and then spend 3 months trying to work it off (Jan Ullrich style), or be like Lance and never gain much in the first place.

OK, so who is in? I weighed in at 138 lbs post race at Kona. I’m up to 140 lbs today (Nov 15th). I’m aiming to stay at 140 lbs by Jan 1st.

The only rule is to be honest with yourself. No hopping on the trainer on Jan 1 losing 5 lbs of sweat, and then standing in the sauna for half an hour to make the weigh in

Dev

140??? Dude, I could bench press you.

If I see ya at Wildflower, you’re more than welcome to. I just don’t want to give Konaexpress any advantage before next year! Its like Jan and Lance. Lance wins the Tour de France in December while Jan is stuffing his face with Black Forest Cake!

Dev, I am in. Right now I am 184 lbs. and the goal is to actually lose weight over this period by getting back to training over the winter. So if I can stay the same weight, I will be very happy. So are we going to post once a week on a specific date? Let me know.

I’m in, but I must admit that I may have an unfair advantage since I have only resumed training after a long layoff. 185.2 this morning with a normal fit weight of 175-180 and a fighting weight some where south of that.
I’ll throw my hat in for a 180 lb on Jan 2.

(btw 2lb up from 138? I’ve eaten burritos bigger than that!)

Let’s say we post once a week to keep ourselves on track.

No need to post the actual weight folks. Just +1, 0, -1. Actual weight is irrelevant. We all have different body types etc. The goal here is to stay steady and not turn into Michelin Boy over the next 6 weeks

Dev,

I’ve gained three lbs since the end of the season. I’m off to Australia for two weeks of site seeing and scuba diving and won’t be training, so I might gain another lb or two. It’s not the end of the world. I’ll probably gain another lb or two over X-mas, but after New year’s I get back into riding the trainer indoors, x-country skiing and master’s swim. Typically I gain 5-7 lbs by the end off the New Year’s from what i was at the end of tri season.

That’s quite OK with me as from now until after X-mas is “down time”. I’m still doing the odd run and working with weights sporadically, but won’t get back into a structured program until after Xmas.

You gotta take some time off once in awhile. Even Peter and Lori, when in their primes, used to call Friday’s “beer and pizza” night.

To quote Cosmo Kramer…“I’m out!”
.

I am in but won’t weigh myself. I started the 3 weeks standard process detox program monday, should carry me thru thanks giving. hoping to lose weight actually!

I’m in. I"ve gained five pounds since IMC and I’m only 5’3’ so that’s a lot… My pants are tight and I’m really crabby and feeling like a slug.

I want to keep it to 130 or less; thanks for the motivation!

I might move myself into this one. I’m at 185ish, and in spite of a pretty decent workout schedule I’ve only lost 2 lbs. I think that is largely due to the swimming I’ve been doing, I feel like I have more upper body muscle these days. I do have about 10 lbs of fat to lose, but I also expect a few more lbs of muscle to come on over the winter.

Don’t let the meatheads see this thread. They will laugh you out of town.

(Wish I could post a picture. Hmmm…)

I will play along.

This morning I was 163 which is up from about 158 during the racing season. I don’t expect to go much higher than this all winter.

I’m in. I’m at about 168 right now, up about four pounds sice I slacked off a month ago and went on vacation. I’m hooting for 164, where I was at my recent low.

I am in, I just recently returned from Kona too but didn’t come back at 138  I spent my time watching and apparently eating ;( I will get a current weight and post back. I stopped weighing when I got back because I was so depressed. Last check I had lost a couple pounds and back to about 160. I should have no problem with this since I am preping for AZ in April if I can just keep my mouth shut.

edit: Checked in at 159 11/16

I’m in.

I’m fetching about 136-138 lbs these days. I need to get down closer to 130 if I expect to haul my sorry ass over Brasstown Bald in April.

I think I can stay close to 135 through the holidays.

January 1, it’s goodbye beer - it’s painful just to type that. Those remaining 5 pounds should be cake from there on.

I’m ready for this…

So what tips do you all have to keep it off and or lose. I am watching what I eat, drinking more water, one cup of coffee a day, eating lots of fruit, cutting back on the amount (portion size) I eat and watching the crap I tend to eat a lot. I work for a company that makes automated bakery equipment so there is always cake, cookies, cupcakes and other pastries around. Will power. I am tested every day.

Dev,

I am with you, I weighed 138 as well at the end of my last race, and now weigh 140 which is where I want to be until next spring where I hope to drop down to the 137-8 range.

Count me in on this challenge!

Dev: I’m in as well. This morning I weighed 172 lbs, one pound up from IMHawaii. My goal will be to get to 166 by Jan.2.

OK, here is who I can stay constant:

  1. Keep meal sizes the same
  2. One Hour of training means I can have one snack either mid morning or mid afternoon
  3. 1.5 hours training = 2 snacks
  4. 2 hours = 3 snacks
  5. 2.5+ = eat as many snacks as I want
  6. Zero hours training means zero snacks and accept being hungry late morning, and late afternoon.

No deserts, no chocolate bars, minimal saturated fat. I don’t drink much alcohol anyway.

Espresso is good (zero calories). If you have any weird designer coffee from Starbucks, watch out for all those phantom calories that will go straight to the making of the Michelinboy effect.

Dev

Edit: What the hell…Konaexpress is going to one up me by not only losing his spacers, but dropping 6 lbs. If any of you guys are racing 45-49, let me just say that you are in trouble!
