The Special Relationship

Every relationship has its bumps, right?

The US/UK one is having a few right now. I assume Trump has never forgotten that Christopher Steele is ex-MI6. So not the best of starts.

Then there’s the leaked memos from Britain’s US ambassador. The issue here being not so much the content of the memos (I bet Trump has seen some beauts from his man in London on the state of the UK Govt and Brexit over the last three years) but the fact of the leak.

But Trump goes for the ambassador, and has now waded into Theresa May on Twitter for good measure.

And in the meantime, Britain’s likely next PM, a man who should also learn to control his mouth, has previously said Trump has a stupefying ignorance and is not fit to be President.

It’s like when mum and dad are arguing really badly and you’re just not sure that this time they’re going to make up…

from the Independent:

Mr Trump, who has said he likes Mr Johnson and suggested he would make a good prime minister, has also said Nigel Farage, the leader of the Brexit Party, could be ambassador to Washington.

Farange as UK ambassador to USA? Where does Trump get these brilliant ideas? What next? David Duke the US Ambassador to UK?

Fortunately Trump does not get to decide who others nominate as ambassadors. And IF Boris nominated Nigel Farange, I suspect the Queen may be tempted to make rare political interjection.

Just another case of Trump outstupiding himself yet again.

He will be really annoyed when he sees this

Maybe Kim can broker a peace.

British Ambassador: trump is thin skinned and the administration is inept.

trump: I will whine for three days on twitter about these words and that mean ambassador must go.

State Department: We have not been told anything about the president declaring the UK ambassador persona non grata, go ask the White House.

White House: We don’t know the current status of the UK ambassador, go ask the State Department.

So basically trump has spent the last couple days trying his hardest to prove the UK ambassador correct.

Fortunately, where this relationship really matters…with intelligence sharing and cooperation amongst the professionals that actually get shit done…none of this will matter a whit.

But will it? If you had sensitive information, would you not have any pause sharing it with trump in charge? He already revealed sensitive information from Israel to Russia. Would you not be concerned that the it could be declassified for some political reason? I think there would be more pause than any time since WWII.

Where’s the part about his stupefying ignorance?

All this “Special Relationship” stuff goes back to the 2nd World War (I think) and back then it was really really important.

Nowadays it’s a load of embarrassing sycophancy on our part in the UK against a clear lack of interest on the US’ part. Am i right?

What’s the view on the SR from that side of the pond?

Doubly annoying for me. He’s standing outside his old house, which I wanted to buy before he got anywhere near it (but couldn’t).
