So Mrs. Windy is making me go do nature crap like hiking in a national park. In exchange we have a really nice cabin with a pool, a fishing pond (never been fishing but since it’s stocked I figure I’ll catch something), and a giant porch which I plan to drink moomshine on nightly.
Additionally we’re going to Dollywood since it is a semblance of something fun to do (or it will suck) and according to research consistently wins best park food in America (Food and Wine folks gushed) so that’s a plus.
This post would go nicely under a master thread titled “One Man’s Quest Against Nature” btw.

Wait…I do - you’ve NEVER been fishing? Do yourself a favor and hit Cabelas out on I90, pick up a travel fishing pole (one that breaks down to 4 or 5 sections) and some basic tackle. The guys working there will help you out. I predict that after you catch a fish or two on your trip you’ll want to do more of it and there are plenty of ponds around the chicagoland area that are easily accessible…not to mention some great fishing in Wisconsin & Michigan.
So, you don’t know how to do any work around the house, have never been fishing. Do you know how to change the oil on your car at least? Can you run a lawn mower?

There is a cool arts guild in g burg. Also if you like Ruben sandwiches there is a little known gem called the cheese cubbard. It’s in some weird shopping area in g burg that resembles a European village. Hell it might be called the village. There is a WWII warbirds museum. even crazy cooter from the duke boys has a garage/museum. The aquarium is okay. If I think of others I will reply back on this thread.

ETA - as for the vacation I’ve got nothing. I’ve been to the Smokies several times over the last few years. I’ve never come close to Dollywood (I think, since I have no idea where it is exactly) and the only thing we did in Gatlinburg was go to a steakhouse and then head back to the park.
If you have a 4 wheel drive pick up/SUV with good clearance there is a road that goes from Cable Mill visitors center down to the tail of the dragon. Very cool drive.

There’s golf, rope courses (like, climb up and then zip line down over the treetops), magic shows, roller coaster parks, Ripley’s Aquarium, go-carts and a NASCAR park, whitewater rafting, mini golf, airplane tours, dinner shows, horse riding, etc.

Have you ever been to Dollywood or the GSMNP??? On weekends, this area can be HORRIBLE with the mass of people. Cars can be backed up for miles trying to get in to Dollywood, or to go thru Pigeon Forge to get to Gatlinburg and the park entrance. The weekdays are not as bad.
One of my favorite places to visit is Cade’s Cove, a loop drive in the park. It is ten miles long, I believe, but so beautiful. On weekends, unless you get there really early, the line of cars waiting to get in to the Cade’s Cove entrance can stretch for miles down the road. Again, it’s awful. Sometimes, I’ll park my car in one of the side parking areas, before the entrance, and then run the loop. You see so much more that way. One time, my family dropped me off so I could run, and they drove the loop. They were stuck in traffic so I beat them around the ten mile loop. I saw three bears while running and they did not see any (being stuck in traffic)

Wife and I went to the smokey mountains about 8 years ago. We stayed in a cabin in pigeon forge, I think that whole area is burnt down now.
First and foremost, check the fishing rules, even if it is a private lake and stocked, you might need a license. I don’t know the regulations there, but it is worthwhile to check. Also just because it is stocked, doesn’t mean you will catch something.
Gatlenburg is a nasty tourist hellhole in my opinion. Wife and I were there for the hiking, didn’t care about their downtown which was full of Riplys believe it or not, airspray t-shirts, gift shops etc. We ate at one place but I can’t remember the name. For the most part we ate at our cabin, we arn’t foodies.
It was off season (April) but we did do a river rafting trip which was fun. I would recommend that, but it doesn’t seem like outdoors type things isn’t what you enjoy.
Being from the north I was really thrown off by the number of baptist churches, like literally every 5th house we saw was a baptist church, no joke.
