HS boys XC team placed “six seven” (out of 79 teams, international meet).
This delighed them more than anything else today, I believe.

I saw this outside a vegan Thai restaurant in Watkins Glenn, NY this weekend and thought it looked cool.
A vegan Thai restaurant sounds like the best kind of vegan restaurant. Probably the only kind of vegan menu I wouldn’t get bored of.
I learned a lesson on motorcycle lane splitting this week. Driving home from work I got caught in a backup on the interstate, pretty much at a stand still. I heard motorcycles coming up from the rear while I was stopped, so I presuming they were coming down the center line frpm my back left (I was in the right lane). I looked in the drivers side mirror and confirmed two motorcycles coming up from behind straddling the dividing line, so I started moving toward the shoulder to give them room to pass and at the last second saw to my right a biker passing me on the shoulder, just ahead of the bikes splitting the lanes. The sound I’d heard was actually the bike approaching on the shoulder, not the two lane splitters. He rejoined the two after passing the vehicle ahead of me, so it wasn’t coincidental, they were riding together.
Lesson learned, stay put and let them do the navigating. Dumbest thing I’ve seen bikers do in a while, but I’m sure it won’t be the last.
Is lane splitting legal?
“… Because a photo opp could develop”
Our uncle was a professional photographer, and always had a camera of some sort with him, or within reach
Whenever he saw something worth capturing, he’d spring into action - sometimes with ease and patience, as to not scare the moment away; sometimes with speed and fury, as if he was starting a fight
Then, when the task was complete, he’d look at me, or my cousin, or my brother, or whoever was nearby, and ask “why weren’t you ready?” as we had clearly blown it
Technically lane splitting is doing this when traffic is moving, and only legal in CA.
Lane filtering is moving through completely stopped vehicles, also illegal in most states including VA.
I’m surprised to see people on cruisers doing this as they tend to be more risk averse (these were cruisers). Street bikes, I expect the dumbest things imaginable.
A diver found a dugout canoe in Wisconsin. Carbon dating puts it about 1,000 years old. It’s in great shape. I like that they’re going to leave it there.

Cool shot. Forgive the stupid question, but can you do that with a phone’s camera?
yes, and easier with 3rd party apps with more manual control
in a sense, easier with a phone than with a “real” camera because phone software is SO good at processing for stabilization, which is a huge PITA with long exposures on clattering trains etc.
Interesting, thanks! Makes sense about the image stabilization with a phone
I designed, laser cut, and installed some screens in my driveway; I’m also a math, geometry, and shadow geek.
Not disappointed.
phones have absolutely destroyed “real” cameras in lots of areas, most notably long-ish exposures and panoramas.
Thanks again. I learned some stuff about phone cameras. What app do you use?
Those driveway pics are cool AF
Very cool.
It’s funny to see “SteadiCam” setups with a phone attached
What app do you use?
I don’t use one but Halide is kinda top of the heap for camera apps.
