I just took off my cycling shorts and cancelled this morning’s long ride when I looked out the window and realized it was raining. Checked out the weather radar and saw that it isn’t just “green” rain, but “yellow” and “red” as well. I have a policy of not actually leaving in the rain since I tend to get wet often enough without going looking for it.
My last ride was a week ago today, and 45 of 85 miles was in a drenching rain. It has rained, just about steady, every day since then. I’ve cancelled four rides in a row.
It is currently 42* and pouring.
Okay, am I a) just a wuss; b) needing to buy a computrainer; or c) needing to move to southern Oregon. Something needs to change or I’m going to turn into a fat bastard.
I just came back from a 2 1/2 hour morning ride and it started raining an hout into it. I guess that if you don’t ride in the rain you don’t live in Vancouver? (Sorry, khai, si, leo and AJ!).
Think on this, will you not race if it’s raining come race day? The winner of your AG will be.
California is a pretty big place. We got 29", yes twenty-nine, where I am during one nasty week in January. The roads are still being worked on, and probably will for some time. I still rode on the days other than when the mountain was effectively locked down for three days. It’s all about having the proper gear, and if you live in Oregon (I lived in Eugene for a little over a year) you ought to know that already. Burley makes some great gear.
Here is a fitting quote for your situation…“It is not the things themselves that disturb men, but their judgements about these things.”
-Epictetus, Encheiridion…So you see, it’s not the rain that disturbs you, but how you are dealing with it.
“it’s not the rain that disturbs you, but how you are dealing with it.”
I know. I’m honestly thinking about doing something about it within the next year (ie moving). Does it rain much in Upstate NY?
BTW: I started this post in the rain at 7am. It is now nearly 7pm and still raining. For those of you in Michigan, have fun as I imagine that you’ll see this soon.
It would be down right stupid to ride in weather like that.
I will vouch for the California comment. I have lived in this awesome state for 4 years and have gotten sprinkled on a ride about 2-3 times. It is just unbelievably amazing how excellent the weather is. Even if this winter has been the rainiest in years I think I had to cancel 1 or 2 rides due to rain between November and April.
