90s 4 x 4 Hiluxes are absolute beasts. Many moons ago I was on a trip through off roads in Central America back in the 90s climbing up to a volcano. There was a nasty 30% pitch full of mud and our group had Mitsubishi Montero, Nissan Patrol, Sangyong Korando, Nissan Hardbody and a couple Hiluxex. Only the Hiluxex made it up the slope and we had to use ropes and a lot elbow grease to pull the other trucks.
My dad had a friend who was a Toyota salesman back in the 90’s. He did a ton of what is now called overlanding in his 4X4. We joined him on a few trips to Baja. He didn’t need to pressure his buyers, just had a photo album of pictures from his adventures that he kept open on his desk.

Mine had a pinhole leak in the fuel system somewhere, so if it had not been started for a while, all the fuel would drain back out of the engine & it would not start.
However, the thing was so bloody simple it had a little primer pump on top of the fuel filter, so all you had to do was pump that, get fuel back through & it would start.
If it was a modern 4WD, there would be all sorts of sensors and shit that would rule that out, and the engine bay so crammed, there would probs be no room for a small primer.
My brother buys Ford Rangers. They seem to crap themselves in some form within 1-2 years and need to go back to the Stealership for repair, and the mechanics there take several attempts to fix it even when my brother has clearly told them he reckons for sure it was a faulty turbo waste gate actuator (it was, but they fixed 2 other things first that were not even broken & the thing shat itself again500m down the road from the workshop).
