The poll on National Parks documentary

if you guys have the time, it would be worth your while. 8PM to 10:30PM, 5 or 6 consecutive nights, this is night 3.

It makes me want to return to Yellowstone-and I regret not visiting Yosemite when I had the chance…“sigh”…

x2; watched again tonight - loved the phrase “patriotism is religion of the soil”

contrast with what the Congressional reps are doing here in Utah fighting wildnerness designation bill in Congress

They have captured the natural beauty of this country like i have never seen on video. Fantastic series so far. It is amazing the foresight some of the early park proponents had on the future of the USA. The command of the English language and quality of their writing was impressive back then as well.

For those of us who have missed this, myself included, it appears the full episodes are available online the day afterr the episode is broadcast.

I’m definitely a fan of this! Ken Burns is a genius. Some of the interviews are a little cheesy, but that’s ok. They are very well done.
I loved the first one with all of the Yosemite air time. I go on climbing trips there every year.

I want to read more about John Muir. What a life. He was an endurance athlete too. Can you imagine walking from Indiana to Florida in 1867?

I’m also thinking a lot about current environmental issues like global warming as I watch. There are definitely lessons to learn from our history with the national parks.

Awesome. i’ve anticipated these broadcasts for weeks. First night my wife fell asleep during the show!

Having spent some time in Muir Woods, in the Bay area, I am ashamed that I never took the time to find out WHO John Muir was.

Learned more about Acadia last night than I ever knew before.

Agree. Muir is a name you see everywhere, and then one day you realize he was a man who did great things.

“I want to read more about John Muir.”

no! don’t read about john muir. read john muir. the mountains of california. the yosemite. my first summer in the sierra.

and when you want a break in there somewhere, clarence king:* mountaineering in the sierra nevada*; william brewer: up and down california in 1860-1864.

Just ordered an anthology from Amazon with all those written by Muir. Didn’t realize so much of his writing was readily available.

Or:

The Eagle Bird by Charles Wilkinson
Wilderness and the American Mind by Roderick Nash

or, from a writer who loved the West,

Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner

I noted that, too. In Ken Burns documentary about the Civil War, the letters that were read were astounding.

Another Yes. My wife works for the NPS and it is ‘must see TV’ for me. We have it on TIVO!

The series took on a whole new meaning for me with the Grand Canyon episode.
We just ran Rim to Rim two weeks ago and with the documentary made the run even more special.

As with so many of his other documentaries, Ken Burns has done another outstanding job. I have been astouded by the first 3 episodes.

Gotta love Pres. Roosevelt hanging with John Muir for 3 solitary days, camping beneath the Sequoias and Redwoods.

No kidding. This series is amazing.

In terms of president’s, what this country needs is somebody who has actually spent some time sleeping on the ground in one of our beautiful national parks! I’d vote for that guy.

Nice. I found them on the first night they where on and I was hooked!

The conflicting positions between exploitation and conservation was told well. I appreciated the transcedent themes as well. We started to talk about a trip to experience Yosemite.
