The one desire of your heart...and stomach

Ham, cheap ham. Swiss cheese and white bread with yellow mustard. Lots of mustard. Boiled ham, not smoked, not roasted, boiled ham.

So, there I was at mile 18ish of the run at IMLP, sun beating down, doing well, better than I thought I would. Then, there it was…at the aid station. I was going to take an orange or two…then, there it was glistening in the sun…a sandwitch. I asked the folks who were at the aid station what I would need to do to get a sandwitch…then, like saints they handed me one. Ham and Swiss with mustard. It was the best meal of my life. Better than going down on a Queen. It was salty, bitter from the mustard, thick from the generic white bread and stuck to my teeth.

That sandwitch was what I needed to light a fire im me to finish square dead in the middle of the pack. That sandwitch had carried me to a personal victory over cloven hooved animals and white bread.

Since then, many a run or long bike ride has drawn up memories of the ham sandwitch. I have visions of the ham sandwitch. I dream of the ham sandwitch.

Yes…I just had a ham sandwitch.

We all have one…dont cop out on burritos. What is your dream meal (during the manic phases of your training / race)

Great recovery meal too…my others include hummus version in a pita and lots…i mean lots of tomatoes.

Cheeseburgers…preferably a double-double w/ extra pickles from In n Out. With a giant Coke w/lots of ice.

Outback 11oz special…with jacket tater…sadly…no longer available in Ontario :'-(.

Blizzards.

I thought it was gonna be a thread about marrying a chef… but while on the subject

I did a 100mi ride where they handed out PBJ sandwiches- half sandwiches actually. a piece of wheat bread with both PB and J on it, folded in half. they put em in ziploc baggies, so you could toss em in your pocket. I went straight to the tables where they were being made, stuffed one at a time into my mouth, on sammich, one bite, no need for the baggy

+1 for blizzards. or for that matter, any ice cream.

Speaking of which, I had one today after my lunch hour swim. Vanilla custard w/ pineapple chunks mixed in. not as good as the chocolate custard w/ strawberries from last week, but still a delicious treat.

You could probably find a better recovery meal, but it wouldn’t taste as good.

4 eggo waffles smothered in butter and grade A Maple Syrup from Vermont.

The lamb Tava at the Blue Moon Cafe in Incirlik, Turkey. Like coming home.

Oh, for sure it’s the big, greasy, soaked-through-the-bun truck stop burger… Bonk-B-Gone!

I saw that today…the local Outback was closed down…what happened?
Andrew

Bacon Cheeseburger with a Fat Tire to wash it down. Even better if the weather is nice and you can have a Fat Tire while you grill the burger… then have ANOTHER one to wash it down! I can’t wait for summer.

I see 3 containers in front of me with one large spoon. 1 jar of PB, 1 jar of nutella, and 1 carton of espresso icecream. Eat straight from the containers, mix and match to your hearts desire.

A greasy cheeseburger from Burger King - hold the pickles, and a chocolate milk shake.
My 2nd place favorite (but the one that happens more often based on proximity) is a McChicken sandwich from McDonalds with just ketchup and french fries (yup, the fries go in the bun with the meat). If I’m anxious, tired, frustrated or depressed, this meal makes me feel better. I often feel dirty afterwards, but it works. I sometimes wonder if it’s my version of buying a copy of “The Catcher in the Rye.”
