The Official, All Encompassing, Lionel Sanders Thread

One tip is have more kids  …. once you have two constantly bringing an eclectic mix of germs back from the chemical warfare factory that is kindergarten by the time you have a third kid you’re almost impervious to germs especially if you’re propping up oneself with healthy food plus plenty of red bull and chocolate to manage the smorgasbord of life…. or at least that is what someone with 3 kids told me

Controversial take: getting kids to become immune is easier in a colder climate. You’ve got Brits wearing short sleeves all year and Swedes in hoodies in mildly freezing temperatures (on a bike), both oblivious to all the germs and the risks as if they didn’t apply to them (they don’t). You’ve got Central European school kids playing footie in the school yard all year during the break between classes and there’s never time to waste putting on a jacket, hat, gloves, scarf…

Then there’s places like Arizona…

There’s a lot of truth to that. Also, if your younger kid goes to school where your older one did you get to skip out on the 6+ months of being sick because you already had all the germs that school had to offer. If you move schools you get to do it all over again.

It’s not cold air that gets kids sick it’s being indoors with other kids that causes a respiratory infection to spread. Here in AZ that can happen during the summer when it’s so hot outside.

ITs actually worse in those type climates, everyone has to be indoors with air conditioning all the time. When it is 115 outside, it is a sprint from one enclosed area to another with kids. And then it is just snotty nosed fingers touching everything they can, so everyone else can join the fun!

That’s right but my 13 year old boy and his buddies go out and ride their e-bikes when it’s 110+ out, they are pretty hearty. And my son was very rarely sick; I can count on one hand the number of times he had something that really laid him up for a few days.

So you’re the reason why we have roving E-bike gangs? Jail for you!

At least tell them to turn the damn lights on at night. I’m not sure if they are just saving batteries or think they are cool, but it’s insane to be cruising around with the lights off.

He’s only 13, we don’t let him ride at night.

They can be a menace and the Scottsdale PoPo often have chats with them about riding safety. But part of me is just happy they are outdoors getting into some mischief and doing wheelies instead of sitting at home on social media.

Mate I did get Rotavirus from my daughter in Scotland. Wouldn’t recommend.

If only you knew how much of a topic this is with London cycle groups!
Daily calls to the police when there are sightings of those “kids” in e-bikes and balaclavas trying to do bikejackings…

Yeah, kids are the worst at hygiene and just basic etiquette. It was a regular occurrence for a kid to sneeze directly into my face. With three kids, at various times at three different schools/daycares, there was a pretty hellacious run of a few years where it was just a constant gauntlet of germs. But having come out if that I do feel like my immune system is quite robust and I almost never get sick now. So it does get better.

You want healthy kids? Let them play in the dirt, get sick from their friends, and never give them a flu shot.

So why didn’t Lionel make the trip to Augusta?

Sick before Cozumel, raced anyway, made it to NY, then when the race got moved, it sounds like he basically said to himself, “Enough is enough.” He went to Canada to visit family and got in some quality training there in preparation for IM Florida.
