The Official, All Encompassing, Lionel Sanders Thread

Quite an impressive list if everyone shows up but we know now that LS isnt

Is there a ladies start list? I don’t see it

Thanks!

If everyone on that list shows up which never happens, it’s not bad but not terribly impressive!

Men’s race will be exciting!

To be fair, LCB won’t be coaching anyone because Reece will.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Lucy in the professional sports media space after she hangs up her racing career.

You lot equating LS and LCB never fails to make me laugh

Yeah, it’s hilarious. They say I am hater for saying this but it is always predictable that LS will duck a mid distance race when the start list starts looking a bit too scary. LCB, just like Patrick Lange, never back down from a tough race regardless of who is going to be at the start line.

Hey, who knows how much money Lionel is really making from sponsorships? Of course Lucy plays in a higher league in terms of performance, nobody suggested otherwise; but she’s female, and sponsors pay women less. Lionel produces engagement that’s off the charts, and he’s a man.

Lucy is leagues above Lionel in terms of PR and marketability . Sure Lionel has his legion of followers but Lucy is out there constantly being the darling of the industry. She is a marketing dream.

Perfect for selling the Dubai blood money!

Boo Fucking Hoo!!

Both are marketing dreams, which is why they have huge legions of followers and more importantly huge sponsor support. Each are at important but very different phases of their careers.

I think that’s evident in that Lucy has MAJOR global sponsors like Red Bull as well as non-endemic sponsors like Breitling.

This isn’t really comparable and speaks more to the UK and European markets for who they’re going after. Soccer fans are generally poorer in the UK than fans of Rugby, Cricket, and those who would compete in Triathlon.

In North America, Red Bull and Breitling sponsor NFL athletes. Red Bull has barely touched lower end team sport athletes in the US focusing on extreme sports guys like Alex Honnold when they dip into niches.

My gut feeling has me thinking the last couple years for Lionel haven’t been that great financially. Doesn’t it seem like Talbot has backed off a bit on the content and is adding in other stuff more often?

My assumption is the fact that he’s not getting as many prizes and thus bonuses as before is hurting. Then consider the industry cutting back sponsorship because bike sales in general fell off a cliff.

Now factor in he’s got 2 kids, plus he’s also experiencing the same inflation in everything travel related etc that we all are. I would assume the last couple years have been the worst financially in a long time for Lionel.

Right that’s my point, these are non-endemic and high paying sponsors. They aren’t looking at a guy like Lionel. LCB is higher return on investment.

Ha - sounds like a guess to me, just like I’d be guessing.

I actually the COMPLETE opposite of you - I’ll bet highly that he’s quite stable financially and comfortable now, as he’s a household name for anyone following triathlon and draws reliably huge crowds at any triathlon event. He’s certainly nowhere near falling off the popularity spotlight in tri yet, even if he isn’t considered a major #1 threat to win Kona.

If he made all his money off race winnings, I might start to agree with you, but sponsorships likely dwarf his race earnings in recent years.

I would assume in individual sports injury riddled results will by default result in less than max revenue generating potential. He’s likely making some base “salary” from sponsors and then additional bonuses tied to race results *most likely. So yeah when you can’t get good results your missing out (that’s not earth shattering news or some hot take).

Would a company like Lululemon offer performance bonuses to an athlete like Lionel that competes in a sport that has literally nothing to do with the brand? I have no idea how these kinds of deals work so I’m genuinely curious.

You’ll notice that Lionel changes into shorts and a tshirt quite frequently. So I’m assuming there’s something in that contract. I wouldn’t be surprised if they had a good bonus for crossing the finish line in first wearing their clothing?

Canyon I’d assume has win bonuses as well as HED. The Feed, who knows. But he certainly works them into his videos frequently, so they likely have some required level of content and it might not be win-based.
