Cool Hand Lionel
In sooo many ways. Making things exciting when nothing is happening. Repeating his failures. Never really having a plan. Claiming to have his mind right. Submitting to the captain (Frodo). Digging his own grave. Not sure who Lionel’s “Dragline” is - don’t think it’s T. Cox.
“Training more doesn’t always mean training better. For years, I chased big hours and tried to mimic what other athletes were doing, thinking it was the key to success. Turns out, I was completely wrong. In this video, I break down why training smarter—not just harder—is the real game-changer. If you’ve ever questioned whether your approach is actually working, this one’s for you.”
I love him.
The gift that keeps on giving!!!
Training this way, training that way, at a certain point we need to ask if he still has the genetics/potential/ability to win a WC, even with perfect training.
Adding volume can reduce time at or level of higher intensities. Reducing volume can give more time at or higher levels intensities. This isn’t new, most athletes, top pros included, fall somewhere around 80/20. A 70.3 falls in the same basic aerobic zone for every top pro.
I’m increasingly less sold that Lionel’s v Iden’s v Kanute’s training plans are going to produce materially different results if you shuffled them around between the three.
Saw the message at the end that his dog Chewy passed away. Sad. I know how much they loved him.
talbot asking for next video content. since other pro triathletes did it, lionel should jump into a hyrox event
…Is the Joy of Triathlon.
The Hyrox phenomenon is really interesting. It is like athletes from all kinds of sports are using it as some kind of fitness marker and “away from my sport fun”. So many of the die hard elite Cross Fitters are starting to do it and making a fun weekend out of it ( like Las Vegas last weekend) and more Triathletes are doing it now. Luke McKenzie did a Hyrox in NZ last week and the guy looks ripped.
Next video:
“Sure, intensity and specificity are important, but you need to have a big aerobic base first. You cant start building the pyramid at the top. So from now on, it’s all about less intensity and a lot of easy volume to build a base upon which I can then start building intensity”
Heard a bit of @tilburydavis wisdom in that video which was a nice surprise.
I wish someone would go through all his YT content and make a list with date and epiphany from each video. Would be cool to see the timeline of twists and turns, 180’s and 360’s.
I rewatch a lot of his stuff going back years and it is just incredible to see the mind-bending chopping and changing of his training philosophies and ideas. The rants over the years are hilarious.
Where? I heard a bunch of things, like the “fact” that Lionel felt like he’d won Kona in 2017, or that he spent 7 years trying to train 28-35 hours a week.
These things are contradictory to his actions (firing his coach and changing everything after Kona 2017) or his words (all the declarations of how low his training volume had been), or both.
Which is why it’s called Tri*Joy} The Spirit of Multisport.
It’s a thing… Goggle it =)
It’s the perfect training plan if he wants to win his age group.
Everyone else is doing it wrong. Lionel knows best and will prove everyone wrong.
Lionel surely has to be one of the top 3-4 top paid triathletes ever, doesn’t he?
For sure in the top 10. But I highly doubt top 5 even.
He is from the county that pays the least amount for athletes ( Canada) and he doesnt have any world titles.
Now I would 100% say that he is by far the most top paid self earning athlete in our sport. But Im also not 100% sure what the profit share is with his YouTube channel. Talbot has said a lot of times that he keeps all that money.
If Lionel was European he would probably be like # 4-5 in the money list.
Macca will always be #1
