The newest ex-professional athlete to do Ironman

If you’re an NFL fan, you’ll remember this one:

Al Toon did IMWI yesterday, finishing in 13:59:59. He was a terrific receiver for the Jets, playing for them for 8 years, even making All-Pro a few times if I remember correctly. He was also an Olympic trials qualifier in the hurdles and triple jump.

I talked to him for awhile today and yesterday and he’s seems like a really cool guy. He’s like 6’5" but he’s definitely thinned out since his football days.

No real point to this post. He was just one of my favorite receivers back then and some of my teammates from back in the day used to say I played like him(sorta).

Saw him finish. Looked mighty happy about it.

Toon was an awesome receiver back in the day. He’s one of a few NFLers to do an IM. Darryl Haley (all 325lbs. of him) got attention back in '95 and '96 for his IMH races, and Butch Johnson (of Dallas Cowboys fame) did IMH back in '97 or '98, I think. He got spanked by a couple of 70 year olds, too

Yeah, but did you see me finish? Did I look happy?

For a lot of pro footballl players there is no athletics after football. I’ve known a couple of former CFL players who are fat boys now.

Nice to see he’s still active.

Unfortunately for many ex-pro football players, they are lucky if they can walk 10yrs after they retire.

True.

Wasn’t Toon the guy that was getting concusions every week toward the end of his career? I seem to remember it was him that was just hanging on and hanging on when everyone was urging him to leave the sport while he was still coherent enough to make the decision.

Glad to see he’s found something productive to do with his retirement years. Good for him.

He also blew apart the receiving records as a Wisconsin Badger. Glad to see there is something athletic that I can beat him at.

Funny. My mom said she was going to be sure and tell my uncles I beat Al by over 3 hours. Believe me, in my family that will go over better than anything else she could tell them. Needless to say, except for my mom, they don’t really get the endurance sport “thing”

Maybe the concussions helped him see IM as a good idea. There’s gotta be some excuse.

What’s yours?

My excuse? I’m a blonde ex-stoner!
