With the announcement of Discovery leaving the pro peloton I have to spend some time speculating what racing will look like over the next five years. One of the teams that may stand to benefit from the emergence of the “New Era” is likely Slipstream.
There have been a few intersting milestones with their bike sponsor too. Felt, bike supplier to Slipstream, has won a bunch of triathlons even at the world championship level. Felt has come up short at the UCI world championship level and hasn’t been able to garner that type of credibility and recognition in the pure road cycling world.
Until now.
Davis Phinney’s son, Taylor Phinney, is our new Junior World Time Trial Champion on a Felt DA, giving felt their first ever UCI World Championship in road cycling.
The title made it sound like you were going to discuss more then a bike brand you sell at your store with a mention of one rider and one team. Perhaps I misjudged the title.
I hope the “New Era” emerges as a hopeful time of new athletes and existing athletes that adhere to high moral and ethical standard of sportmanship and restore the focus on cycling to one of a sweeping and beautiful sport that typifies man’s struggle against nature, his own endurance and technology.
This New Era is a hopeful time, and as Phil Ligget said during the Tour de France, this may be cycling’s finest hour.
Athletes like Phinney and cmpanies like Felt are the heir apparents to cycling’s new thrown room.

Wow! With a name combining Major Taylor and Davis Phinney, (and of course Connie’s genes) you know this kid is destined for greatness.
Well, let’s not let one awesome result make the argument for future success, but I’ll agree he did well and is a positive beacon for the future. I think he is like 6’3 or 6’4, so he is made for sprinting and TT-ing, so perhaps he has a future there…That said, the kid is the son of a world class cyclist and his mom won the gold in 1984. If anything, shouldn’t we expect this out of him?
