The pros get lots of attention and media coverage, but I find the “disabled” people the most inspiring. I used double quotes around the word disabled, because these guys despite their paralysis or amputations are in the process of achieving one of the most amazing physical accomplishments.
My own father is disabled (amputee) and the stuff that he had to go through following his accident was mentally traumatic and ever since he is on the verge of depression. When I see how people who lost a leg put themselves through Ironman I gets tearful.
I think Dick Hoyt is the most inspiring man in the race, what he does for his son is just beyond words.
I absolutely agree. I just saw how he pulled the boat and then carried his son out. Amazing. My wife stood behind me and looked at it. She was truly inspired.
I saw the Hoyts speak at Timberman this past August. Not a dry eye in the room. They are absolutely amazing. I haven’t checked – is Mark Herremans racing this year? I probably just butchered the spelling of his name.
Lee
Agreed, they’re a truly inspirational pair.
Have any of you guys heard about Tracey Richardson? If not, she’s the featured athlete this year, and the NBC special will be about her before the race coverage. Another inspirational story, I think it will be well worth watching.
