The math of a marathon (wolfram alpha)

Pretty cool:

.

I tried it for cycling 100km at 20MPH and it grossly overestimates the number of calories burned.

Correlating speed and energy utilization on the bike is not practical. Too many external forces at play that dictate your resultant speed at any given power input (e.g. position, drag, rolling resistance, drive train efficiency). Running is a much closer correlation, but it is still a function of unique inefficiencies based on one’s stride, contact friction, body position, environmental factors, etc.

It’s easy to calculate energy consumption (1Cal/km/kg is close) while running. Cycling requires a few more assumptions but kreuzotter.com does a much better job than the Wolfram calculator.
