As hard as FINA tries to pretend otherwise, the short course records and SC world championships have almost always been softer than the long course stuff. The men’s 4x100 free relay was one of those soft records, and there have been a couple of other sub-3:09 swims before not ratifiable under FINA rules.
Felicity Galvez’s world record was a consolation prize for her after not making the Auastralian Olympic team. Libby Lenton-Trickett would likely be significantly quicker in that event if she swam it rested.
I thought there were specific WRs for short course and long course, if this is the case, surely the best in the world are the ones setting the records and then beating them accordingly?
You do compare back and forth, however, and when the SC world record goes to someone who was only 4th in her own national championships (and more than a second slower than the winner there) in LC format, it’s a sign than the SC side of things is slower.
Hey, I was stationed at Loughborough (wasn’t doing tri’s then though) back in 83/84, and again in 88/90! Did some liaison with the Royal Navy in Gibraltar too! Small world isn’t it?
Sorry to hijack the thread, just remembering happy times when I read Loughborough.
Foster just made the inal in the 50m fly! A short stroke but very fast, just behind Pine who was 100th of the WR!
He is a SC specialist - a new title to his palmeres would be good for us old 'ens
records left right and centre…not a bad championships is it?! great stuff…and you’ve all seen the 50m final by now…so getting beat by the Croatian who broke the world record aint bad at all for a 37 year old…i reckon he’ll do well at Beijing too…who knows…if he gets one of those ‘go faster’ Speedo suits he might even win! heh heh heh
small world relating to triathlons for sure…my friend was at Loughborough not me BUT yes, I’m from Gibraltar…I’m sure anyone related to the armed forces be it US or UK will have been to Gibraltar at least once…actually, I remember when the Navy Seals were very visibly doing some training here many years ago and they stuck out like anything…they were down the gym and then off running shirtless up the rock with their Oakleys etc…posers or what!!! hahahahhaha…SBS kicks your asses boys…HAHAHAHA…can of worms time
Hi STeve, I didn’t see any of the footage today as I discovered my garage had been boken into and bike and wheels stolen. Great for Mark to get a silver.
Enjoy that can of worms, I’ll add that SAS eat Delta force for lunch to your opener
It was a strange break in, more by what they left rather than what they took. They took my GT iDrive 4 1.0 which I had modified quite extensively. They left my Kalibur sat in the trainer, my r2.5 which was locked to my Pace 303. I thought it was chancers/druggies but for the fact that they took the wheels out of the PAce which were Hope Pro 2 hubs on Mavic 717 rims and the same as the pair in the GT.
Some stange choice that I later discovered they had made was takinga box of carb gels and leaving three tubs of drink powder, taking two sets of allen keys and leaving a torque wrench! MAjor pain in the arse as the GT is the only one not covered by bike specific insure new for old beside my mnt '95 Kona lava dome!
Now I have my bikes scattered between friends and my kitchen until Monday when I hope to get the garage door resecured and more locks and anchor bolts fitted.

I guess it is possible that some swimmers while slower at Long course than some of their peers maybe better at Short course particular if they are very good on the turns.
Also I have read that some of the speed suits are only actually advantagous on the turns and in the dive as this is the only time the swimmer is actually moving quick enough to gain from the Hydrodynamic properties. I guess this means that suit like the new speedo one maybe having more of an effect over the short course races and records than long course?
My friend Ian Martinez from Gibraltar who swum with him recalls…
"…I now he sometimes made it to the pool in the morning to train but never made it out of the changing room. he would lie down on the bench and fall asleep…and never even got changed…this happened plenty of times…
Mike Higgs was his coach at Southend and he just gave up on him, and trained him whenever he wanted to get in the water, thats it…too much of a headache…in the mean time, there was Sarah hardcastle doing nearly 8,000m per session… in the same pool… she used to get in the water half an hour before anyone else to get the mileage in…so we had both extremes in the same club…this was at Warrior Square, Southend.
Then one summer Foster really fell out with Mike Higgs and he came and joined us at Runnymede Swimming Club… I spent some time at Warrior Square, thats why i saw what happened there… but i was mainly based at Runnymede which was just down the road…
I think after Southend he then went to Millfield College… i’m not sure but i have a feeling he got expelled from that school for some reason…
If i recall correctly he did his best swimming at Bath… not certain how long he was at Millfield for… was was never at Loughborough…I was at Loughborough University… I never saw him during my years at Loughborough…this was all after my years at Loughborough…Foster is 7-8 years younger than me…so i had finished at Loughborough when i came across Foster…i went to Southend and Runnymede after Loughborough…

WOW. That is exactly how I remember it, but I’d never have remembered Higg’s name… As for your buddy at Runnymede, I had a bunch of rivals/friends at that club, and given the age reference, he may be a little (1-2 yrs) older than I, but he should know the same folks (Chris, Dave, Gary and Marian)
ian tells me…
“Gary is Gary Stepford… used to be a breast stoker i think…I think Chris was Chris Miles…they kind of finished as i joined Runnymede…I used to swim with Martin Godsave at runnymede…”
