I am just planning a project (hobby) along the lines of tha TriRig did last year and will take my time to build a super light TT bike. No particular reason just want to.
I know the Old P3 was pretty light. But could look at the S5 as a frame option as well.
I know there is a couple of Chinese frames out there too but keen to look at known brands first.
What are peoples thoughts?
preferably something that is still available to buy please
while we are at it if you can recommend a light TT Bar would be nice!
I have an XL frame that weighed 17.1 pounds with SRAM Red, Zipp Vuma Chrono Crank & Zipp 808 Clydesdale wheels, 3T Brezza LTD bars & speed play pedals.
Mine is a 2009, I’m sure a smaller frame would easily hit 16 pounds.
Not sure really how light all these new “superbikes” are, even though I know aero trumps weight.
Old P3 stripped and recoated with an RCa style finish would be one of the best options. Might need an Enve fork if you got a frame with a wolf fork. Then some Easton attack bars (the old one piece ones) with new extensions in the same finish. The original parts would be fairly cheap but customising would add a bit of cost (but worth it IMO if you’re looking for light and stylish).
I guess the S5 is good choice also because it would be better for climbing geometry wise too?
Probably not, if you were setting a bike up for climbing you should be able to get your contact points in a climbing/aero position compromise either way. Usually this is just achieved by sitting up on the bullhorns and sliding back a bit on the saddle. Some people claim to be more particular though.
The S5 is a great choice however because it is really light in VWD form and really aero too. The trick is whether you can get in your best aero position on it with the tall stack and no forward seat post.
With infinite money I would have loved to build a S5 TT bike for my wife for the Joe Martin stage race time trial. It is like a half kilometer of downhill then uphill at 7%
Cannondale Slice Hi-Mod, for one of the lightest true TT frames. Should be lots of second hand frames out there for relatively cheap…
Also has a BB30 bottom bracket, so you’ll save weight with the BB & crankset (BB30 = lighter and stiffer than GXP setup with external BB), and standard brake mounts, so you can really go to town with the weight weenie brake calipers and other components.
