The latest from the Barnwerx

If you saw my other thread, remember I started with the bike at left below. I then added the bars on the bike at right below to a Trek Equinox 9. It stretched me out, but didn’t get me much lower because the head tube on the Trek was so much larger. So I went ahead and put the new bars on the Cervelo. Below is the result.

I rode the bike at right today in “training configuration” (the wheels you see, a standard helmet and jersey, not the LG Rocket, pockets full of innertubes, cell phones, dog mace, etc.) on a favorite 45 mile route I do weekly. I certainly didn’t go all out 'cuz I knew it was rather foolish to make major changes and then head out for a long ride. But after I got on the bike and realized how darned near perfect it felt, I got some happy feet at times. Towards the end, my neck was a little bit sore, but I’ll adapt. This was strong. I can get used to this and it seems fast and surprisingly agile. My average speed for the route was .5 mph above the norm for the bike at left. Mind you, it’s December and I’m not in tip-top shape. I was kinda stunned at the strong ride. I’m sure it was part happy feet, but I’m sure part was the new position.

In comparison to the Trek photo, moving the new bars to the Cervelo brought my elbows back in a bit and the extension length seemed to be spot on, whereas it seemed short on the Trek. Versus the original Cervelo setup, my elbows and hands are a good bit closer together, but quite comfy.

Looks pretty darned good. Do you feel stretched out at all though? Kind of looks like you may be. Also, I know it is a running ST joke, but is your saddle a touch high? You’re not at 6 o’clock on your pedal stroke in the photo and your right leg looks pretty straight.

Looks fast though, nice work!!!

The new position looks good and your seat is NOT too high. I’m going to try a similar position on the new PX Stealth. My collarbone is better and may try to get aero on it today. Want to get the build finished. Glad the new position feels strong. You look really fast.

I don’t think so. When I take those photos, I set the camera to shoot at 12 second intervals. I spin, then try to stop in time so I can freeze everything, but have some assurance that I’m in the position I’ll acutally be in when exerting. I think when I stopped on that shot, I dropped my heel a little from where it would normally be. On other pics from this series, I’ve measured the knee angle and I’m between 145 and 150 degrees every time.

I have a long torso relative to my legs. I was looking to stretch out more and it really feels good in the new position. It feels like my arms are more clear of my chest and my breathing is easier in the new position … especially when I’m applying power. Being more stretched like that, my arms can be closer together which should lower my frontal area. After riding 45 miles yesterday in this position, I feel no ill effects today. Of course, it’s usually the second day that I feel hard workouts, so I’ll have to see what it’s like tomorrow.

Ric,

I hope you’ll post some pictures of that build when you have it done … and of you on it. Glad that shoulder is feeling better.

Last week I think I asked you where you were “lost in the midwest” (from your profile). I don’t recall if you ever told me. If you did, it’ just proof that I belong in the 50-54 age group … or maybe even an older one.
