'The Gates' are they as cool as they say?

Can a STer run through Central Park and snap a few photos of 'The Gates ?? I want to see what the average dude running through them sees… I think most people would like to see that.

Can someone let us ‘non-New Yorkers’ live vicariously through you for one run ?

Is that really art? And that couple who are responsible for it, are they Artists or Con-Artists?

I watched Nightline on Friday night where they covered the project and the artists. I personally thinks it a bad joke on New Yorkers! The artists had no explanation for what they where doing but they are making big $$$ on photos and drawings of the project. I think the gates are an eye sore.

Dude - what part of them paying for all the expense of the project - to the tune of 21 million (plus/minus) is making big money. My undestanding is they are drawing and photographing the project to pay for it.

I’ll be running in the park on Thursday evening, with my running group and will be happy to snap a few pics. Not getting into the whole “is it art” thing, they look pretty cool - I’ve been watching the set up process for the past few weeks. It certainly is fun to run through!

Cool, thanks… I’m looking forward to seeing the pics !

Some photos here. Check out the interactive feature on the right.

Yeah, but they are selling the photos and drawings for big bucks, six figures a piece! They will definately make money on this project

$21 million to put up colored cloth and some poles in a city with thousands without food and shelter. Good call, Cristo.

I have been watching them set the “gates” up for a while now. The thing that is most impressive to me at least is the sheer number of these things. They are everywhere! It also brought a lot of people out to the park in 35 degree weather. Central Park is generally pretty dead in the winter. I am not sure you would run under them if you run in the park. They are mostly on the walkways and not the runing lane or the bridle paths.

If I make it up there I try and snapa fe w pics myself as well.

Many would say “Good call, Mayor Bloomberg” but all he said was “Fine, put 'em up.” The Cristo’s invested the $21M themselves. They were actually *disappointed *that they didn’t have to make a big deal about NOT being able to put them up.

BTW: They’re frauds and hacks, but they know marketing.

What* is* art anyway? I feel more comfortable with an artist who can’t explain his work (or is unwilling to), than one who gives me an earful of propaganda.

Anyway, no one’s more susceptible to a good con-job than a bunch of triathletes. I dropped $1,500 on a set of wheels last summer for what? So I could go a few seconds faster?

i think they look pretty amazing, i wish i was in nyc to check them out myself. high art / low art, at least they are getting thousands of people off their asses!

Well if that’s your point, then Steinbrenner is really heartless to deny all those homeless people access to the Yankee payroll. I thought the project looked pretty cool from what I have seen, and is definitely much more impressive than any of his other works in terms of the sheer number of people who will be exposed to it.

The steel order itself pulled a struggling company out of bankruptcy.

From timberwolf: “$21 million to put up colored cloth and some poles in a city with thousands without food and shelter. Good call, Cristo.”

From the New Your Times: “By the time the 7,500 gates are taken down in two weeks, the city expects to generate $80 million in business, with $2.5 million in city taxes alone, according to the city’s Economic Development Corporation.”

From me: “Good call Christo. I wonder how many people on this board would freak out if this wealthy individual was not permetted to spend his money as he chose. In this case with approval from the city.”

I'm going to try to get into the park tomorrow afternoon. I'll try to post some pictures.

what is art…are we art, is art art?

See, I think it’s crazy that we, as a society, have determined through the freemarket system that teachers and doctors make less than pro athletes.

This I did not know and thank you Quad for pointing it out. I guess I was a little too quick to judge. Only a little…
