The future of the Ironman World Championship

Yep, that’s why I started this thread. I think that’s the outcome.

Take it for what it’s worth, but Jack Kelly is posting on IG that he is hearing from some men who are qualified for Nice 2025 that the page for the race is no longer available. He’s also “hearing” the race is going back to one day for next year, men and women. That would jibe with what @desert_dude is saying regarding a pro woman he knows. Anyone men here already 2025 Nice qualified who can verify this situation with their registration and page?

I have a Nice slot for 2025 and haven’t been sent anything about a change. If they make a change back to a single race day they better make it quick. That would drastically change the slot #'s for the remaining qualifying races. They’d almost need to do a 2 day to cover the slots then go to 1 day for 2026 and onward

Ok, a quick update. This could just be an oversight on their end but my “Upcoming Races” in my profile show Kona Sept 14th, 2025. The “Race Page” selection takes me to the two 2024 landing page. No 2025 race page from my registration

That could imply two day race a month apart, with women in October.

True, but I wouldn’t put it passed IM to mess up the registration wordage. We’ll see.

And, for what it’s worth, both races show TBD on the website’s main race list.

Also true. LOL! Maybe @rrheisler can put his feelers out.

Showing Kona instead of Nice on mine portal as well.
I think they just made an error…none of the link on that Kona page works.
But IMCA links all work as expected.

You would expect California to work because the race doesn’t change locations every year.

The men’s race was in Kona this year. So assuming an error in their back-end due to it still being linked to this year’s race versus anything nefarious.

edit to add: searched the public side of the site for “worlds” and this is what currently comes up. So…that’s fun…

My friend has all her races including 70.3 world messed in her portal as well.
It seems to be just an error on the ironman part…nothing more.

Looking at your blog, I’m thinking you wouldn’t need a roll down if you weren’t carrying those guns.

It’s correct on the WC page

Considering the contract only has 2025 left, that men take more Nice slots then women, one would think letting it stand for one more cycle makes sense.

working on dropping them!

If you dig around in the links there is an option to see the AWA rankings for Ironman racers separated from the combined IM/70.3 racers.

It’s possible I made a mistake, but you can double check the work. The page I linked to has " Historical Category Rankings" and you can scroll down and tabulate totals for each AG.

The number of women racing the full distance is so low in absolute numbers that it’s pretty insane they ever tried to get them their own day. It just doesn’t make any sense now that I’ve looked at it. I like the idea of two days racing. I like the females having their own day. Now I’m convinced more than ever that if IM wants to stick to having a separate female pro race, they need to go back to the 2022 Kona model of two days of racing with some of the male age groups filling in the rest of the female day. MPro + 2500 male on Saturday, and the following Saturday is WPro and 1000 female and 1500 male from the other age groups? If my numbers are correct, that would be 4000 out of 37000 males racing the IMWC (~10%) and 1000 out of 8000 females racing the IMWC (~12%).

Seems more than reasonable, if Kona could be stretched over two weekends for maximum revenue. From a purely sport perspective, it looks like one day with a 75/25% male to female split is plenty “fair”.

If they keep it the single day, and start the men 30 minutes earlier, have them follow some LED lighted paddle boards and hold back the start of the male AG groups by an hour if you need to.

It would be hilarious if all the people who let the slot roll and raised their nose at the idea of Nice because it wasn’t a “true” World Championship now had to deal with the anguish of turning down a slot that ended up qualifying them for Kona.

I guess there would be a few grumpy souls who planned on Nice, but IM could make them happy pretty easily.

IT doesnt feel like the week apart scenario would really work to alleviate many of the issues. There would be huge overlap in hotel stays, a lot of people stay more than a week, and certainly would if they got to watch a separate race. So we would have the problem of a shortage and or gouging of rates to handle the 8k to 10k folks.

You would still have the huge crowd on the island at about the same time and of course all the sponsors would be hanging for both races. I think you need at least 3 weeks apart to ensure that the turnover in rooms would be near complete and people would leave the island for the next group. Would also give the island and volunteers more time to recover and be ready to do it all again…

Yeah objectively they need a month in between to have any hope of lessening the impact.

Is it much hotter there in October vs November? I’d imagine so. August is def too hot to do any mass racing, but I have never been there in October.

They could keep Ironman Nice as a regular event next year for those wanting to stay local. I would imagine not everybody would want to travel to Kona at this point. That would relive some congestion in Kona.
