The Fourth, a good day

So it was a pretty good day. I set out for a ride that was only supposed to be 70 miles. Well, 70 turned into 130. I just kept riding. I felt so good I wanted to keep going, so I did. Averaged just under 19. By far the best ride I’ve ever done at that distance. Just watched the firework show from the Del Mar fair. Best one I’ve seen in my life. Threw back a couple beers tonight. So what did everyone else do today?

Played with my nephews, watched a parade, had a party at my parents house, ate a lot of food, tripped and gashed my shin and hand, ate more food, watched fireworks, cleaned a house, going to bed. Get to look forward to a trip to the zoo with the munchkins tomorrow.

A good day. A good, no training, just recovering, laid back kind of day. The proud Auntie in me can’t resist an opportunity to post a pic of the kiddos in their parade gear. Who knew a day with no training could be so nice?

Awesome ride on your part though. Gotta admit, a little part of me is really jealous!

Sounds like a good day as well. No worries about no training. Take the break you earned it.

Had a good day myself. 90 miles in 90*heat including a nice climb up hwy 9. then hung out at my ex’s with our son, had steak for dinner and then went to watch fireworks

7 mile trail run, lots of beer to celebrate

its hilly round here
.

Yeah, mine started with a 2+ hour ride, then after breakfast and a shower, a trip to the lake for some OWS, then home for BBQ’d burgers. Watched Independence Day (yeah, old movie, but appropriate), stopped about 2/3 of the way through to go walk around the neighborhood to watch every one else’s fireworks…

Now the bubba across the street has decided to fire his off… starting at 11:30. And he’s got a HUGE bucket to light off.

Right on Couchweight!
I was on the bike at 6am for a 40/4 brick. Following that, it was home for a 4th kiddie parade in my neighborhood, and then down to the beach for a bodyboarding sesh. Then home for a nap, followed by a little BBQ in the backyard with some friends, then back down to the beach for fireworks. It’s now 5:30am and I’m headed for another surf, followed by a 2-hour run! Woo hoo!

I had a great day too. My wife and I did a local 5k (her first.) Took a nap and then went to the pool and swam 2500y. Went to my mother in laws for a bar b q-she is a great cook!

The best part is, my wife loved doing the 5k and is now hooked. She has been training for her first tri and this was a huge boost to her confidence.

Out of curiousity how many stops did you make, for what purpose, and how long?

I have 3 cages and can pack 4 hours of food comfortably. Beyond 4 hours I have to stop somewhere and do a empty and refill. I feel that stopping “cheapens” the tri-training aspects of a ride. Eating and drinking on the bike are important skills which must be practiced. Also I know a lot of people that stop for 15 or more minutes vs. a quick in/out. Relieving is something I will always stop for, but I made it through IMFL bike without having to so any training ride should not be an issue.

My maximum ride length is usually planned before I start. Yesterday I took 2 bottles and the weather was cloudy 80s with humidity so I was able to go just over 3 hours(62 miles).

Impressive about doubling(almost) the length of your ride. I might add 10-20, but never 60 miles.

Super day! Started out with a 2 mile open water swim. Followed by a 4:30 bike ride. Followed by a 1 hour run. Weather conditions were perfect all day. Overcast skies and about 83F. What a break from our normal 93-95’s. Best bike session I’ve had leading up to IMKY so I was extremely happy.
Followed it up with my SO’s family at her mom’s house for 4th celebration.
Happy fourth!

Had an awesome day…

No training for me. My wife ran a 4-miler in the morning. The kids and I watched/cheered.

Loaded up the car and headed to the North Fork of Long Island. First we picked white cherries at a farm. Headed to a vineyard for a picnic. Great wine…cheese…and fresh buffalo mozz/SD tomato/basil sandwiches…while the kids hunted for frogs and turtles in the pond.

Another vineyard…more tasting (for my wife mostly).

Amazing dinner at a fabtastic restaurant…*another *bottle of wine.

Early evening walk on the beach for shell & rock collecting. Kids fall asleep in the car on the way home. One of those rare days when everything comes together…

Woke up to cloudy, overcast and humid. Figured my ride would get rained on but checking the radar it didn’t show anything so I thought I’d be ok. Head out and it’s nice because of the overcast but close to 100% humidity. No wind so I’m moving pretty good. Hit a brief shower at about 20 miles but it ends in 5 minutes. Figure it’s a just a stray shower. Get to the 30 mile mark where I planned on filling up my bottles because I knew there wasn’t another stop for a while. SINCE WHEN DOES A CONVENIENCE STORE CLOSE ON THE 4TH!! Ok, still have a full bottle and since I’m adding a new road today, just might find another store. Right after the closed store, the rains start, and keep coming hard for the next 25 miles and still no stores. Finally the rains let up but I’m just about out of my drink. 10 miles later I finally get to a store and fill the bottles and grab an ice cold Coke and a snickers. Ah, that hit the spot. Finish up the rest of the ride with no more rain and arrive home to find they never got a drop. 70 mile day. Spent the rest of the day eating burgers, drinking beer and watching/lighting fireworks. Happy birthday America!!

A great day! Mine was good as well.

On the bike at 5:45, rode 65 with some friends up to San Clemente and back via Camp Pendleton…it was misty and a bit chilly! Gorgeous.

Home by 9:30, a hearty breakfast with my family. Lounged around, watched some tennis on TV, played with my kids until 1. We all fell asleep and took a nap until 3. Then we packed up the car headed to Legoland to ride some rides and watch the fireworks show.

Good stuff.

I spent a beautiful day at the beach. Boated out to Cape Lookout (in NC)… vibrant blue sky, fluffy clouds, turquoise water, white sand, minimal crowds… relaxed with a book, splashed in the waves, did a short open water swim (probably 1000m)… enjoyed the tranquility nature…

… then beer, burgers and icecream. Perfect.

I only made 1 stop. I can carry 3 bottles plus my profile aero bottle. I usully carry more food with me then what I need anyhow. I am not big on stopping. My one and only stop was less then 5 minutes I think. Refilled the bottles and downed a coke and a jumbo reese’s peanut butter cup. I usually plan my distance a lot closer too. I just felt really good on the bike and was having fun exploring new areas, so i kept going. Besides, I had the day off from work and nothing else to do.

So what did everyone else do today?

Drink coffee, talk to Dad on the phone; drive out to the East Bay w/Katy; run 10K; PR! (I think); chat with Cousin Elwood and Karma; ride bike in 98F temps; lunch; drive back to SF; shower, relax, email, put feet up; coffee; go to dinner with friends; think about walking down to watch the fireworks, but fell asleep instead. A good day!

With a schedule like that on your day off, she can’t be all that significant…

mountain bike in the morning. Water ski until the evening and watch fireworks. Watch season 2 dvd of 24 until 1:00.

Did a 5k with my 2 year old son. He rode in the jogging stroller. We showed up 5-10 minutes late (not exactly sure when it started) but still came in with a respectable time of 32 minutes. We also had to make a couple pit stops at the aid stations to get my son some water. I think he was thirsty from yelling, “Daddy look, racing,” every ten seconds.

Afterwards we all went to a local fair and followed that up with a BBQ. It was a blast. I wish every day could be like yesterday.

Fought a structure fire until about 1 am. (started around 9pm Tuesday) Be careful with those fireworks. Crashed about 1:30am and slept till 8:30. Got up and went and swam with my wife. Amazingly the local state park pool was nearly empty. Only 5 people there and all of us were swimming laps. Usually its like swimming an obsticle course. It was overcast and misty/rainy with temps in the low 60’s though so that kept the kids away. Finished there and went for lunch at a local pizza shop. Came home and cleaned house/napped for about 3 hrs. Went to a bbq at a friends house from 4 to 9. Pretty good day all things considered.
