At any given moment during training, we have cold wind, sweat, sunscreen, chlorine, lake water, heat, snow, rain, or any of the above combos on our face and body.
Is there any lotion anyone recommends for afterwards, mainly for the face? I’ve been getting dry skin, mainly on my face area, because of all of this. I usually eat right, sleep 8 hours, but the dry skin bugs me.
I live in San Francisco. I’ve noticed when I go anywhere else inland (Sacramento, Yosemite, Reno, etc) for an extended period, my skin is better.
Anyone with the same dry skin issue? What do you use?
I use Neutrogena Oil Free Moisturizer - I use the sensitive skin kind and the spf 15. It’s super gentle if your skin demands that. I also have used Cetaphil, which is a little heavier but also nice.
How about somehting to get rid of these crow’s feet that I have from squinting all of the time?? I am tired of being told I look 38 when I am 35!! (has nothing to do with the baldness of course!!!)
turtle–i’m assuming you are a woman, go to the lancome counter and let them hook you up. get the silver primordial jar with spf for day and the blue jar for night. you’ll love it!!! if your eyes look tired, get the under eye cream, it’s the best on the market.
loreal has a micro-derma pack that is exellent. use it one time a week in the winter, in combination with the lancome products. if you really feel like treating yourself, lancome makes a fantastic glycolic peel that is gentle for once or twice a week. it’s expensive at 180.00, though. (i use it, because i’m afraid of looking old–but i’m going into my second fall/winter with it, so it’s been worth it).
also–taking fish oil will help with your skins elasticity and “dryness”. (2 capsules a day, unless you can choke back the oil by itself. blech!!)
lancome isn’t cheap…but you’ve only got one face
if you’re more of a natural products person, jason makes an olive oil soap that is really really good. also jason makes moisturizer that is pure and very effective–i think it is aloe and olive oil, can’t remember. my best friend loves the stuff and her face is like a porcelin doll, just beatuiful skin. at night you can creak open a vitamin E capsule and smooth it on your face. it will repair, moisturize, and surprisingly–also exfoliate a little bit. i’ve also had very good luck with grape seed oil, a very light application before bed time. all of these you can get at the health food stores.
olay has been praised for it’s regenerist line as well, and that line has a good spf vitamin moisture therapy for day, as well as a night treatment. i have 2 friends that love the stuff, and it has been endorsed by the cosmetics cop, paula begoun.
Besides Botox, I swear by Clarins. I use it for other things such as oily skin, hand creme, body wash. I know many ‘older’ women who swear by the product and it took plenty to convince me on this one (don’t enquire).
I don’t have wrinkles, but if I did - Clarins would be my savior.
Jason also makes products for men. They have an aftershave balm made mostly from aloe with some moderate SPF. Feels good, not oily. Wholefoods stores carry it. Neutrogena also makes an aftershave cream with SPF 15. It’s not very durable (sweats off) but it’s easy to use if you shave daily yet couldn’t be bothered to use sunscrean before each ride or run. Plus, it’s available at most drug stores.

From what I know…
Wrinkles can be caused by squinting (in which case the best remedy may be a good pair of sunglasses or glasses ), but they’re more/most likely caused by sun damage, so if you don’t want them to get any worse, pile on the SPF.
Also, in my opinion, crow’s feet are the nicest wrinkles and make a person seem distinguished and happy.
shit. sorry, i almost asked that questions, but didn’t.
anyway, loreal makes products for men…spf with a light moisturizer, exfolitating scrub, and other stuff. you can get it probably in any grocery store. bought some for my husband. (loreal is partner company of lancome, so you still get good products without girlie packages )
still though think about the vitamin E or grape seed oil at night. those are good treatments. you can also make your own scrub with coarse sugar or coarse sea salt, honey, and a little olive oil, mix it all to consistency of paste. use it in the shower over your dry skin areas and it will buff em up and moisturize at the same time. you can also put this on your face, just don’t scrub too hard.
origins makes good products as well. there is something called “nightamins” and it is a night cream chauk full of vitamins. plus it has a scent that helps “the sandman” come. bought this for my husband as well. but it was like 29.00, don’t know how much you’re willing to spend.
anyway, hope you get it worked out. a friend of mine used to have her hands crack while she lived in CA. strange–now she’s in FL and it doesn’t happen anymore.
I was just think about this. I went for a 20 miles run this week-end and it was cold and damp. Yesterday morning I woke up with chapped skin around my eyes and noes from the constant dripping and wiping. As winter approaches I am thinking of getting some of that stuff skiers use- like chap stick for your face. I think that will help the dryness caused by wind/cold.
On another note, yesterday my son got his hair cut and the stylist asked what happened because his hair was so dry and damaged. He started swimming 4X/week about 6 weeks ago. Try convincing a 12 year old he needs to use special shampoo and conditioner
I love the Kiss My Face line of products. Their moisturizers aren’t too heavy and they have a awesome shaving lotion, that my guy friends love. KMF is available at Whole Foods and most natural food stores, also on Drugstore.com.
Fish or flaxseed oil are both good ways to combat the dry skin form the inside out.
Try Curel. Anadotally (sp?), it was worked great for me. I grew up with exema and psoriasis, but ever since I switched to Curel, I don’t have any of these problems (plus, I get as much sunlight as possible). I carry a travel bottle of it everywhere. I’ve like it better than Luberderm, which doesn’t seem to last.
