I would highly recommend buying a couple three pairs of Bike brand compression/support underware. Just wear them to work and pretty much all the time for the first week or two. I think now would be a great time to get snipped as most folks are a couple months away from major events.
goddamnit, I wish I had run across this thread 3 or 4 months ago.
Had mine 4 yrs ago and no big deal. I used both frozen veggies and long neck beers for the ice pack. My wife was a great team player allowing me to stay on the couch and watch movies for an entire weekend. Had it done on Friday morning and went back to work on Monday framing a house. Took a couple of Vicodin each day more for fun than for the pain. Funniest part of it was when I went into the room for the procedure and the nurse says strip down and you can keep your shirt on if you want and then she just stood there right in front of me waiting. No gown involved in this procedure. Had it done under a local, no groggy side effects. It is an interesting observation as you lay there watching smoke arise from your most important possesions as the doctor koterizes the ends of the tubes.
Couple of recommendations.
- Shave your own stuff.
- Even though you will feel fine almost right away. Do not disregard the no activity order for a couple of days. I had two friends have it done and both played sports one that night the other the next day and things swelled to the size of a grapefruit. While it may have looked impressive they said it hurt like hell and caused them to be down much longer with lots of bruising. One even thought a bike ride would be ok since they would not be getting bounce around. Cannot fully describe how bad he said he hurt the next day.
- Get your wife to agree pre surgery to perform all the duties required for the post op testing. It’s really the best part. I keep telling my friends I should have it redone every year just for the testing protocol.
Good luck,
JT
I had it done last January and for me it was painless. I kicked back for a couple of days and used frozen peas for icing. I ran a week later and two weeks later did a couple of days of winter climbing (NH). No issues. I also recommend you do your own shaving. I also drove myself there and back, and although I had a pain prescription, I only took one immediately when I got home.
Good Luck,
Ray
I am glad to see so many had good immediate results after. I didnt. Massive swelling bruising, infection. Gotta love that canula he put into one of the boys to drain the fluid. No anesthetic btw for that last one. I have never felt that kind of pain before. Ironman anyday of the week over that. My buddies kept reasuring me that I will now have a new level of pain threshold. Not sure I would recommend it.
Bike brand cup type jockstrap. Put a little blue ice bag in the cup pocket, cools things off really nice.
That’s some pretty funny shit.
Luckily, with our last kid, during the C-section my wife just had her tubes tied. She keeps telling me I could get snipped just to be 100% sure!
We did have a guy working for us that got snipped a few years ago. When he went home and was taking a shower the next day he apparently was washing up and found some dried ‘stuff’ on his junk. He thought maybe he fired one off or had a blow out during the operation and the doctor didn’t notice so he spent an hour trying to clean it off. Only after it was too late did he realize that it was the super glue holding his incision that he had just removed and started bleeding and had to go back to the doctor. The look on his face as he was trying to explain why he needed another couple of days off work was hilarious as he explained what had happened in great detail.
I just took a week off and had no problems getting back into my regular routine. Make sure to use the ice pack for the first couple of days and watch a lot of movies and your recovery should be quick.

Very little discomfort, week recovery, greatest thing you ever did.
I had it done 4 years ago - immediate post surgery was okay (though I did feel some of the op whilst it was being done). was swimming the following monday (op was thursday) and on the turbo by the end of the week.
about 5 weeks later though I got significant pain ‘down there’ in the morning (in fact, it started off as a lower back pain) that resulted in an emergency operation that evening. turned out they had left some sort of infection in there that lingered for a few weeks then took off (for whatever reason). the operation gave me another very nasty infection - needed intravenous antibiotics for about 4 days - and then 12 weeks recovery before I was back at work full time. not ideal.
not all bad though - meant I got to sit at home and watch the full Olympics coverage for the only time ever!
recommend you pay and see a specialist who does lots of them - sounds like this route results in fewest mis-haps
interesting that the ability to train came back way faster than ability do work properly
No issues. 3 years and counting. I was down for less than 2 days before I had to get out for a run. I took 5 or 6 days from riding.
You’ve got nothing to be worried about.
I got it on a Wednesday afternoon. Was back to the gym on Sunday using the elipitical and running by Tuesday. Jock strap jock strap jock strap.
It’s the greatest thing you can do. Sex life is normal except there are no worries and the only thing that comes out now is liquid lies.
As everyone else said: Ice (frozen peas), and rest up for a few days. Even if you feel like wanting to do something in the first four days, hold back. Usually, those that get overanxious and rush back into training are the ones that develop irritation, swelling and complications. When you begin running and cycling, wear two pairs of cycling shorts. It’s really a very easy procedure in terms of pain and recovery.
Funny stuff but bad memories. I had mine down 8 years ago and I still feel (mentally) the pain. One side no problem good doctor. The other side a doctor learning the trade. I screamed, I was sweating bullets and nearly passed out. I figure he put the needle into the wrong object while trying to numb me. Another vivid memory was all the tugging I felt while they were snipping.
Life sucked for a week. Went to work and proceeded to get hit by a student who had no idea I just had an operation. Dropped me in the hall.
Speaking of hot nurses. I am in pre-op and this nurse with her mask on comes over and say hi. I am like I know you. She then proceeds to take off her mask and then I knew who it was. We went to high school together, she graduated a couple of years after me but we had a class together, typing I think. The worse part was I knew she had a crush on me in high school. Then she tells me she was scheduled to be one of the nurses in the o.r. and was doing a professional courtesy and asking me if it ok with me if she was in the room. Being a true man, I replied: “How cold is the operating room” and then said, no problem we are adults, However, when I started screaming while being numbed I was regretting having anyone around that new me.
The deed is done.
I don’t think my guy was on the cutting edge - two incisions and injections and all that - but it wasn’t horrible.
Feels more like I’ve been punched in the kidneys.
My nurse was most certainly not hot - and I was so glad I had taken care of the pre-op grooming.
Anyway, hope recovery works like most of the good stories and I can get on my new Kuota k-factor next week.
Wear snug (but not tight) undies to keep things from bouncing around. LOTS of ice and you’ll be fine in a couple of days. I was swimming in two days, running in three, back on the bike in less than a week.
