Bag on the back for camera, leg and arm warmers, tubes, etc. Bag on the front for gels, bars, cell phone and ID. Light is for the many tunnels along the way. C’mon trusty Litespeed, take me the 600 miles (that includes the Skyline Drive, BRP and a jaunt from Cherokee to Gatlinburg, TN). Oh, and do NOT make fun of my saddle choice. It’s comfy and that’s all that matters to me now.
A few years back I was leaving campground on Skyline Drive around dawn and came around a corner just in time to plow on my brakes. Came about 20 feet from a bear sitting in the road looking the other way. But when he looked over his shoulder right at me, he was startled and bolted off in to the woods like he was shot out of a cannon. Since I didn’t piss my pants, I went along riding some more only to see more wildlife on that ride than being in an animal kingdom: turkeys, deer, various birds, squirrels, rabbits, etc. In fact, coming down one of the long descents, I had to stop because there were four deer standing in the middle of the road, and they would not leave the road-way. So when I got within 5 feet of them, one moved a little bit as if to say “go on now” and I rode slowly through the middle of them and could have touched both of them on either side if I had extended my arms. It was amazing, but something I considered every time I rode hard down any of the hills the rest of the trip.
There are 5 of us riders plus a spouse who is driving a support van. Yes, staying in hotels. The light load should help with all the climbs, at least that’s what I keep telling myself ; )
Back about 15 years or so ago, there were a few guys that time trialed the BRP. How fast they could do it. They did it a few times at separate times/years. I can’t remember the names but they were a tad crazy but really fast.
Hope you are also ready for a whopper detour just south of Asheville…NC 151 is a great climb however and the site of Floyd destroying the saturday morning group ride.
When are you heading off, again? I read your other thread, but can’t remember. Any possibility of posting photos and captions along the way? I’ll be riding Skyline out-and-back this summer, just curious to hear more about your experiences.
Love the setup, BTW. I rode that saddle on my Dual for three years. Like sitting on a loaf of Wonder Bread.
get something to help cars not hit you. like a huge american flag or something. haha

Awesome! I do my weekly long training ride out on the Blue Ridge Parkway starting with the climb from Afton Mountain - insane climbing but so much fun and so beautiful. if you can, take a quick detour into Montbello, VA; has a really cool country store and a great place to grab a snickers bar - which will be needed!
