OK, let me start off by saying this Xterra is only available for purchase by the manliest of men (or women) . My friend, if it was possible for a vehicle to sprout chest hair and a five o’clock shadow, this Nissan would look like Tom Selleck . It is just that manly .

It was never intended to drive to the mall so you can pick up that adorable shirt at Abercrombie & Fitch that you had your eye on . It wasn’t meant to transport you to yoga class or Linens & Things . No, that’s what your Prius is for . If that’s the kind of car you’re looking for, then just do us all a favor and stop reading right now . I mean it . Just stop .

This car was engineered by 3rd degree ninja super-warriors in the highest mountains of Japan to serve the needs of the man that cheats death on a daily basis . They didn’t even consider superfluous nancy boy amenities like navigation systems (real men don’t get lost), heated leather seats (a real man doesn’t let anything warm his butt), or On Star (real men don’t even know what On Star is) .

No, this brute comes with the things us testosterone-fueled super action junkies need . It has a 265 HP engine to outrun the cops . It’s got special blood/gore resistant upholstery . It even has a first-aid kit in the back . You know what the first aid kit has in it? A pint of whiskey, a stitch-your-own-wound kit and a hunk of leather to bite down on when you’re operating on yourself . The Xterra also has an automatic transmission so if you’re being chased by Libyan terrorists, you’ll still be able to shoot your machine gun out the window and drive at the same time . It’s saved my bacon more than once .

May I be the first to welcome you back, mon ami?

Pretty funny.

Bernie

I wanted to buy the vehicle, but my wife said no. I thought it fit perfectly into the little fantasy world I’d created for myself. Ah, well…

Anyway, it’s good to be back.

BK

I love the Xterra. I was torn b/t an Xterra and the Nissan Frontier Crew Cab when the Crew Cab first came out. Basically, same vehicle in terms of handling, drive, etc. I went with the Crew Cab. Absolutely loved it. Got rid of it when I left the Army and moved to WI to start civilian life. Unfortunately, I was doing a ton of driving for work and gas mileage was pretty bad.

I wanted to buy the vehicle, but my wife said no.

I can understand you desire with the colorfulness of the ad. But let’s remember, it is a Nissan afterall. You can do much more (off-roading, towing, turret mounting) with a brand new Superduty Ford Pick-up with the Harley Davidson logo. If that is not your style, the Ford Flex looks pretty bad-ass, in a classy sort of way. Being from the Dearborn area, I’m sure you can see what I am driving at.

Bernie

Well…I don’t think gas mileage should be a big priority if you’re conducting regular “let’s shoot the shit outta some Bloods, those bastards” type raids and such  In that instance, I think you’d really, really want those blood/gore-resistant seats, rather than 20 or so miles to the gallon.

Before I left for parts better forgotten, my wife bought a new Buick Enclave and I traded in my Mazda6 for a Lincoln MKS. Plus, I made my dad and my nephew buy even more Ford and GM stock than they already had.

BK

OOH. Nice upgrade. I have heard some nice things about the MKS from people who have it.

I am looking at a new vehicle this summer. I am considering the Taurus, but I will probably buy an Escape.

Bernie

Wait for the 2010 Taurus. I got to see one of those black-and-white-spotted test cars Ford drives around, in a local department store parking lot in Woodhaven some time back. Outside of the camoflage, the interior and the body design looked really, really nice.

BK

Welcome back, and congrats on the change in trajectory!

Nice to see you back here as well.

The Taurus made this week’s cover of Autoweek, which says something about it. The writers did an interesting breakdown and analysis of the car, and the way it was quickly designed and built over 24 months.

Now there’s someone who should be in sales/marketing…if he isn’t already!

Welcome back BK.

The Flex doesn’t even fit into the category of ‘bad piece of ass’ in a station wagon sort of way…

I’m disappointed Bern, you always put the F150 on the pedestal, i put you for a king ranch man more over a station wagon.

Now, I said i’d never buy a Dodge again, but the Magnum SRT8 fits the ‘bad-ass’ category.

Go for the Escape. I heard the new Taurus is suppose to be good, but it’ll be the first production year if you hit the 2010 model, let them work out the bugs.

Go for the Escape.

I probably will. It fits better with my vehicular needs in terms of being able to get places in the winter and the possiblility of towing smaller trailers. But I have always like the Taurus. I have also considered the Fusion, but we already own a Focus and I am concerned that the Fusion may have some of the same problems on snowy/icy roads that the Focus does.

I know this is what most people do. However, I bought the 97 F150 in its first production year. This is when they went ot the Triton V8 modular engine design, and it has worked pretty well for me. I also think that there is tremendous pressure to “get it right the first time” for Ford, and all of the auto makers for that matter. Ford simply does not have the luxury of taking a car with a successful history like the Taurus, and laying an egg. I bet that any bugs in it are minor.

As far as putting the F150 on a pedestal, it is for good reason. It is simply a great truck, and as far as I am concerned the metric by which pick-ups are measured. I am just not in the market to buy a new one when I have a perfectly good 12 years old one in my driveway. I LOVE the Flex, and I would love to own one. I think it is going to be a good product for Ford. The only problem I see is that it starts at $22,000 and then quickly jumps to $45,000 without many options in between.

Good point. But i think they missed the mark on the Flex. While it’s functionality may be tops, it’s styling is weak at best, opinions. I dig the white tops and retro features of the car, but i still can’t get past the box on wheels look.

I normally am not a fan of the boxy looking cars. In this case though, I think the Flex is the perfect “form follows function” blend. I think it has a good retro look to it, as you mention. I think they ought to come out with a wood panel side feature to really emphasize the retro style. I also like the the 3 lines on the back door. That seems to be one of the tie-togethers for the For product line.

If you want to know how manly a vehicle is, just take a survey of the drivers.

The Xterra drivers are about 75% female. Although, they may be manly, which should be about right for BK.

Methinks that if your wife said “no” and you are actually obeying that directive, you don’t deserve that car.
